Why alts? Weekly lock-outs, as others have said. RP. Some of us just like looking at more than one character, having some variation. Different races, visual styles, aesthetics; for the enjoyment of designing another character, or just because we feel like it. I have eight characters, and I play all of them to varying degrees. Some of us just don't LIKE the idea of doing everything on a single character, and we shouldn't really be inadvertently penalized for that, should we? It'd be great to have a bit of accessibility for those of us who choose to play more - especially given that we're paying a higher sub price to have those eight character spaces, instead of just one. Account-wide item trading for everyone!
We dont know what the penalties will be, it might just be that those with Alts already used to going to final coil will just keep on using them simply to avoid a heavy penalty... we shall have to see.
Also alts are great for + to inventory :3 (9001 Materia anyone?)
In my case, I made a secret alt so that I could experience the game from a new persons point of view. I think that would have meant more if I was on an English speaking data center but eh!

I can understand the lockout part but that also means you have to do all the content twice or more depending on how many alts you want to play.
Not much content in the game currently so it just gave me a chance to do the main quest over instead of doing a ton of fates and dungeons over and over again. I'd rather do quests than fate/dungeon grind so it wasn't that unappealing to me.
Sometimes, I want to look differently for a little while.
Sometimes, I want to do the early quests for a different city, to see that version of the storyline.
Sometimes, I just want to be online without obligations, without anyone I know knowing that I'm online.
more retainers
and more rp characters
and more raiding opporunities
Mostly, those who do this (or at least I do, I'm at 8/8 slots) do it because they like to change face a lot and don't want to pay every time for Fantasia. Me, for example, I like the look of certain battle stances on certain race/genders more than others. I prefer Midlander guys for Monk, Miqo'te females for gun jobs (when it'll be there), or Wildwood males for white mage. I RP, but I also am fond of to the old style of RPG where one character had only one class and that class defined him and his story. It's a vintage RPG nostalgia feeling for me, mostly.
To the OP: I agree with the idea but I'd also like to suggest that said box accepted Untradable items, even those with spiritbond % active on it (maybe it could wipe it, like the Armoire does). I have so many green items my alts could use...
My first alt was created so that I could have a summoner and a scholar without gimping either one. I also wanted a femRoe, so there's that.
I made two characters so I could see how the story changed between a male and female character (mostly little dialogue changes), as well as because some gear looks better on the opposite gender. Another reason was that, at the time, my old FC had a lot of drama going on, so I wanted to play on a character free of all that nonsense.
