Not-in-range indication for Cure (and other actions that default target to self)

I would like to suggest a different MP text color to indicate when Cure will be cast on yourself because the selected target is out of range.

I tried to cast Cure on an NPC during a levequest and was confused why it healed myself, since I thought I was close enough and the action was available.

update: resolved, this only happens consistently in certain cases

This indicator wouldn't be as helpful for actions that work on a radius like Medica, since multiple targets can often be in view (yes I know my DPS is right next to me, but is the tank in range?). A number showing how many targets will be affected would be slightly more useful, but in the interest of reducing clutter I am fine if this doesn't happen.

I apologize if this suggestion has been suggested before; I did not find any similar threads in a forum search for "cure target self" and similar terms.

I thought any action on a target you're looking at won't execute if they're too far away? For me, if I try to use any ability on a target that is not in range, the game tells me that the target is too far away. Maybe it has to do with your settings or something?

Umm I dont know if your settings are different to mine but the only time my cures and protect self target is if the target I am casting it on is not a valid target for the spell. I have never had an out of range cure on an NPC or Party member self cast before.

I tried it twice, first on an NPC (a Wood Wailer Sentry FATE helper) and then on an actual player in Thanalan, both of which self-targeted. The player may have been doing some sort of quest, guildleve or levequest but if I remember correctly, you can heal players who are doing those, you just can't attack their special targets.

After finding out the self-targeting behavior from some online sites, I tried casting Protect on another player again, this time much closer and it worked.

Protect can only be cast on yourself or your party members it will auto default to you in any case that you try to cast on an NPC or a player outside your party cure however I just tested and as normal would not cast on any player outside my range and did NOT auto default to myself. Did you adjust your targetting settings fromj the default?

I don't remember changing any targeting settings, but it's possible I messed with something there. I'm on PS4 by the way. It might have been Cure that was doing this self-targeting thing, I'm pretty sure there was something I did that usually worked on others but not always.

I will confirm when I log in later if I can target a player, walk away just out of range and cast Cure.

Have you macroed Cure in such a way that it will eventually cascade down to casting on you if other conditions fail? If not, then it really should be telling you that the target is out of range instead of casting.

So I tried a few different scenarios and it seems this only occurs consistently in certain cases.

I'm still unsure why it wouldn't let me heal the Wood Wailer that time - maybe a quest restriction or a glitch? - but I was able to figure out:

    - If you're out of range it will stop and tell you you're out of range (as expected)
    - If you're casting and the target moves out of range, it will be interrupted (as expected)
    - If you're casting and the target leaves the area by zoning/teleporting/rezzing, the heal will go back to yourself
    - If you're casting and the target dies before it completes, the heal will go back to yourself, even if they're still visible on the map - see image

Restorative/protective actions on a target that is KO'd will default to you if there's enough cast time left. If not, the spell is cast, but the effects do nothing since the target is down.
