This is pretty much what happened. Every Paladin, Warrior, Gladiator, and Marauder needs to be in front of him at all times to split damage. If you can manage it, an unmarked landmark (rock, signpost, fork in the road, etc.) should be defined as the tank stack area.
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Jokes aside, stacking tanks to split up the damage dealt is key to surviving the encounter. The oftentimes confusing nature of the fight (due to the sheer number of participants) doesn't always help, and rendering cap can be a bane to less prudent DPS players, too - you might not see the cleaves coming.
So pretty much Odin is now Doomsday from Superman.
