While I agree that lots of people will never be convinced to play a tank role no matter what kinds of jobs get added, I think that does over-simplify the situation a bit. Lots of other people do play classes/jobs based on aesthetics--something looks cool, so they want to try it out, or they see their character (or themselves) as better aligned with one category--being a "mage type" rather than a "melee type" for example. When I first started playing FFXIV, I played any and every caster class/job, just because I happen to like magic classes. A wider variety of options will always appeal to a wider group of people, and a mage tank might convince some players to give tanking a try if they've never had an interest in melee-style tanks before. Even if it's only a few new tanks, any new tanks at this point would be a good thing.

I prefer easier Tankings Option on All Melee like in Ragnarok Online to save the Holy trinity. Than same old tank, that are not anymore popular toward the players , and encourage devs to create mmorpg without Trinity, like that Joke of brainless DPS Only War that is Guild Wars 2..

Usually people dislike Tanks for lack of DPS & difficult (or boring) gameplay.
Ragnarok Online mixed Tank & Melee DPS together to avoid this and make everyone life better, when creating a party.
Since, we all know that FF14 will never do a system like this , i proposed a Mage Tank instead of DRK ,to attract more people to play the role ,it actually worked pretty good on other mmorpg, why not on ff14 ?

And yes i know that even if they add a red , blue , blood or whatever mage you want as Tank , DPS will always be #1 choice for most of players.
Just wanted to suggest a job that will attract more player than DRK, nothing more nothing less !

Magic Tank would be nice. Even had an idea for one in my class/job suggestion thread:

Personally I only like playing tank jobs, dps is pretty boing to me because it feels really similar to tank but you standing behind the boss and can't tank hits. I don't get the appeal of playing dps at all, but because people do I get instant queues for everything.

It exist still single player games with the tank role. Sentinel in FF XIII as an example.

They can of course turn non-tank classic jobs into tanks, as they have done with Warrior and Dark Knight, but there tends to be a fine line here with what players will accept. Though Warrior mostly went off without a hitch, some people (though still a minority I think) have complained about Dark Knight being a tank. If they go too far with certain jobs that people love for a specific thing just to make them fit the tank role, you'll have a lot of unhappy players. Red Mage in particular is very touchy given its already-poor treatment in XI.
To add to this, the job's appeal is not enough to draw people to tanking on its own. Gameplay also has a large role there.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

This just says it all. Another player who previously played FFXI and thinks DRK should be a DPS. Well it's not a DPS, it's not going to be a DPS, and it shouldn't be a DPS.

I don't think the comment has anything to do with Dark Knight being a tank as opposed to a DPS, it's more saying something along the lines of Dark Knight is just more of the same. But honestly it's entirely possible Dark Knight will be a kind of mage tank. It'd be a kind of different take on it, but I could see them doing that as a means of changing things up a bit, and it'd still be fitting for Dark Knight.

And single player FF games have plenty of jobs that work conceptually as tanks. Dark Knight is one of those, that people want to complain about it is just people ignoring the qualities it has that make it tank-like. As well, while every FF game that has a job system tends to add a few new jobs here and there, the majority are typically recurring jobs. As things stand now we have a very small subsection of jobs that are pretty decently recurring. There isn't anything wrong with them continuing to add old jobs, since there is still a lot of jobs they can add that work as tanks, and to a lesser extent healers.

It actually does. If DRK was a tank, as OP most likely would have seen it to have been, chances are his thought of it failing would be slimmer as a number of people consider it to have a DPS role.

As for the job in general, I think it is going to be hyped up and the skills/abilities exaggerated. Look at NIN for example, we were told we're using poisons. This made it sound like some sort of new mechanics, or hyped it at least. Instead, these were simply just stances like the MNK's elemental fists, tanking stances etc. I foresee the "Dark Magic" as simply being either a tanking stance or a DoT which provides no new mechanic.

I am going to remain sceptical on this one.

Many people just don't like tanking in general.
