Constant freezing and incorrect monitor count...

Never had an issue using the version direct from discs. I bought the steam version when it was on sell since it was cheap and it's easier to download from them.

Currently however I keep getting lag spikes dropping my fps down to 2 or 4 and then eventually freezing the game. I can hear myself moving in the background and opening windows. Moving a window over my screen sometimes fixes it, but it's persistent. Happens more so in dungeons.

I have an overclocked (stable) GTX 780TI. I can play Dragon Age Inquisition on max without issues which is way more intensive than this game. Even on max settings with fps lock I usually stay at a hard 59 fps. I checked my gpu and the temps nor fans are ramping up and the driver isn't crashing, plus there is no artifacting. FFXIV is literally the only game I have issues with.

If it matters, my monitors occasionally go black for a second like alt tabing in full screen mode (I play in window borderless, yet fullscreen does not resolve the issue) and then it will work for a while. I don't know why... In the display options I have a choice between display 6 and display 7... I only have 2 displays, dunno why it's like that, but I feel it's tied.

I tried deleting config files, reinstalling both on normal HD and SSD, and adjusting graphical settings. Nothing seems to help and it is driving me crazy. No matter what I do the display settings continue to only show 6 an 7 instead of display 1 and 2... I don't know how to fix that.

Ghost monitors are usually a fault in the graphics card, but drivers can cause it too.

Blackscreen = TDR = Some driver took too long to process and stalled out the NTOS Process queue.
Could be Graphics, could be sound, could be network, usb, sata, bug in windows, bad memory, bad cpu, bad gpu.

Never-EVER, compare the behavior of games: a gpu is complex circuitry made up of multiple transistor domains for which one game might stress one aspect of it more than another.
FF14 stresses the entire computer, so any weakness at any point can cause problems.

call BS to DAI running on max without issue though, the game is plagued with bugs and nvidia's drivers have single and multicard performance issues.

I'm aware a driver or the video card itself might by causing the issue, but every other game I play that recognizes multiple monitors does so correctly. I have rolled back and installed alternate drivers to fix the issue to no avail. Again, it is isolated to FFXIV which makes no sense.

I agree with the blackscreen... could be a lot of things. I have worked on process of elimination via testing, as much as I loathed to do so, to no avail, and again only FFXIV is giving me any issues at all.

I disagree with comparing game behavior. Known good is a viable method of testing and is good for testing general issues off hand, though I also use benchmarks like 3dmark which are even better (and a favorite of overclockers like myself). You're also being overly dramatic about video cards. I'm not a dunce. I have a huge amount of experience and only posted because I was utterly stumped and figured someone might have had a similar issue. You'd be surprised with what random forum heroes come up with sometimes (and that's not you right now). I appreciate the help but you're coming across as arrogant with that statement.

Call BS to whatever you want, but do try to infuse logic into your random rants of hatred. DAI does have a lot of bugs and a vast majority of them are related to gameplay and thus not related to our topic. I have seen the alt tab bug which is little more than a nuisance and an occasional closing of the game but not a crash. This happened to me twice in a little over 100 hours of gameplay. Nvidia's new drivers have actually increased performance for me by a little bit, but I'm aware of the issues with performance on nvidia cards and was aware of it before the game's release (I was an avid member of their community). The only thing I don't have maxed is antialising which I toned down a little and while I'm not at the point where I think I should be (and many agree), that's a different discussion related to that game.

Games are not created equal, they do not utilise the available api's or hardware equally and are not valid method of testing.

I also use benchmarks like 3dmark which are even better (and a favorite of overclockers like myself).
Benchmarks are performance tests, they do not exercise every aspect of the hardware at the same time.

Even burn in utilities only specifically test individual aspects of the core at a given time: If the power relay is faulty for example, most stability tools would not pick it up because they don't put full load on the system.

If even one game hangs a computer: its not the game causing the hang (as user mode applications cannot put the processor in such a state), the computer is just perfectly stable.
