Most people who DDoS just think it's fun, but (and this one shouldn't be a reason to DDoS SE atm) some people use it as a method of protest, so if a company or government does something a lot of people don't like, they will group together to take down the company or government websites.
Also for everyone saying "herp derp they live in their mom's basement" remember what the stereotype of MMO players was not too long ago.

It is stereotypical to connect DDoS with kids who just like to protest or are bored.
Recently it is used as weapon in cyberwar and i doubt that SE is their target, its more likely the SE servers are just in their crossfire!
new massive account ban
DDoS starting the following day.
I'm sure there is no connection
Also, multiplication of bots farming to get back to lv50.. Bah, losers.
A lot of truth in this statement. We all get routed into narrow corridors to get to the game servers... and all 7 of them are gated through major metropolitan areas. When these attacks are in full force, they stress the nodes along these routes and there is a lot of peripheral impact to other networks that are using those same nodes. It goes on all the time, and creates a major congestion problem in general not only in the US and Canada, but other major countries as well.
