There's ways to implement items such as Ridills and have them just as rare without the game being a pain in the ass or spend 2 hours 57 minutes of every 3 hours doing anything but playing. The dungeon speed run in XIV right now is a good example of how to make items rare. No one on my server has a sword or bow. Implement something hard like that with further criteria for your Ridill and they become even rarer. For example, require a drop from three different dungeon's speed runs to be exchanged for an item. You then need skill in multiple scenarios to get your rare item.
Completely agree with you. Not only kings but money item HNMs like Simurgh, etc, were the most awful design ever.
I camped HNMs for years and we did claim them often but it was just going through the motions after couple of months.
The only excitement there was if someone spike flailed Nidhogg.
The entire design just created a cesspool of bickering, cheating, and player griefing. I cant honestly come up with one thing to defend it.
All my HNM linkshells botted the crap out of those NMs and that's why we got claims, it involved 0 skill.
When a system excludes 90% of the population from the actual content it's a pretty freaking bad design.
