Using items in your home?

I just purchased a house not long ago, and I made and placed a bed, but it won't let use it? ( like to sleep and log out of the game like at the inn)

Also is there anything like a storage chest just for me to use, that I can put in my home for items and such. Sort of like a stationary retainer.

You can put a retainer bell in your house. If it is an FC house, you can also have a chest in there. Not sure I'd the FV chest is allowed in a personal house.

A house bed is just for show. You can lay on it with /doze, but that's all. It is not an inn room bed.

So far, with the right furnishings, you can garden, stable and train and feed chocobos, summon retainers, access your free company chest, access the armoire system, get unique food buffs, and gain some minor crafting buffs. It's not much, but more and more is being added over time.

Not sure if the FC chest is allowed in a personal house.

It is. You'll see your grand company logo on it instead of your free company logo, but apart from that it looks and works all the same.

You can decorate it and plant seed. Housing is a type of end game content you (the player) can do some relax thing. If this type of content is not for you, you just waste your gil on thing you don't use
