Starting conditions
Onion Seeds - i have 8
Thanalan topsoil 3 price in my world - 22K
Seeds - 420-440k
Onion - 450-460k gil
Chokobo range 10 and i want to levelup it
2 empty and ready to use garden plots, 8 seeds each

Quuestions

1) Should i try to intercross it with what? or it should be better for me to garden it with (which?) topsoil and levelup my bird?
2) Is there any difference betweenn topsoils if i decide to garden such seeds w/o intercrossing or i can choose any topsoil with lowest price?

For #2, since it has no HQ and it must yield only one onion, w/o intercross you should choose the topsoil with lowest price.

Btw, seed 420k and onion 450k! if not intercross i feel losing money^^;
Therefore for #1, I will try to intercross something has the best return.
For example adding azeyma rose (relatively cheaper seed) next to t.onion may return onion prince or jute (relatively expansive product)

*remark
However, if your server rose price is close to jute, then above intercross will be meaningless.

1. Just gather grade 1 soil & plant all that onion and use/sell them, it have nothing useful in cross
2. just grade 1 if you have no intention to cross, special seed only give 1 item and no chance for HQ

if you cross it with prickly pineapple the pineapples will give you one of the better chocobo food seeds

This, if you put pineapples next to Thav Onions you get Mimett Gourds which can be used to make more Onions.

I rechecked prices - Sulkys Bud seeds 160-170k, all other cross results costs less than 100k. Gardening seems to become just a hobby after housing expansion - no profit )

Ps maybe i'll try to plant new crosses after enhancing my gear to >353 gathering. As i understood, this may allow to get topsoil at zero price.

There's still profit if you start from scratch, and make your own seeds. Botany and mining retainers help quite a bit, I use a lot of Grade 2 than soil, and almonds/rolanberries.

I'm working 5 gardening plots between FC and personal, and I've reached the point where I can crank out about 20 onions a month, sustained. They've been going to my FC so far, but I might get into the selling game if we get a big enough stockpile.

If you're not making a profit from gardening you're doing it wrong. Try gathering/intercrossing some of the seeds yourself. :3

Indeed it's true (sort of). I've always gathered my own Grade 3 soil, and you only have to do it once every 30 - 40 minutes or so. I recently got into gardening too myself.

It would also help if you have a Botanist retainer since it's a lot easier to gather the Soil yourself, and less RNG dependent compared to some of the important base seeds, like Almond and Mandrake Seeds. While those are easy enough to gather in a 1 hour time frame, but you can have your retainer bring you back 1 every hour (not like the Botanist retainer gets anything useful outside of seeds or crafting shards). Keep in mind the Botanist retainer will never help you get any of the 1-star or higher seeds, such as Honey Lemon, Prickly Pineapples, and Dzemael Tomato seeds, although those are easy enough to gather since they seem to always spawn along with the Unspoiled Node.

For OP condition, While Sesds - 420-440k, Onion - 450-460k gil
if plant the seeds directly, why not just sell the seeds and buy Onions, save 10days,
chocobo rank up immedately (= earn one week chocobo 15% exp bonus)

In this case you can just plant Krakka Root, you may complete 3 cycles in 10days (return 18x3 each plot),
the gil you earn should be more than 30k on each plot.
Therefore if you plant 8 seeds without any intercross, you are losing money. ^^;
