Currently, I cannot see how the limited selection of items for the ring/neck/wrist slot could unbalance the game. You get more bumps to stats from your main armor pieces.

However, to continue the D&D analogy that you brought up, the slots could be unbalancing if they wanted to include jewelery with special bonuses or abilities (say a Ring of Haste, or bracelets that give a strong elemental resistance, or a necklace that give the user a low-power regeneration). Boosting jewelery like this would allow people to customize their characters a bit more for specific situations without requiring the player to give up their character's wardrobe appearance.
