New Fisher: Question on Bait

Is the only way to know which bait a fish bites to is through trial and error and/or looking at a guide?

For those that fish without a guide, do you have any sort of process?

In general, add 5 to the level of your bait, and you will catch everything at that level and below. There are 4 types of bait, fresh/salt/sky/dune, and you need the right type to catch anything at that fishing hole.

Yup. There's a couple rare exceptions whereby certain fish and bait are incompatible, but that's a general rule you can follow.

Level 50+ Fish are another story entirely, however - they're all very specific about bait (Either a specific mooch or a single specific bait type), in addition to all the other rules about catching them.
