If I remember right, the limitations they specifically mentioned (not ones they hinted at), were inventory limitations, glamours not being able to be set per gearset, not being able to have lists for inventory, multiple color dyes per item, zones not being "wide and open", no open world dungeons. I THINK there were a few others but I don't remember them enough to quote them.

As for inventory space being limited I find it weird they blamed PS3 then threw more retainers in as added costs. So supposedly we won't have any MORE retainers due to that I guess?

I very, very happily played on the PS3 since 2.0's launch. I still like a lot of aspects of it. Until recently, I never really considered how differently things render between the systems. I played briefly on a laptop and didn't notice anything until I'd wandered into my house.

I was very used to seeing this:

But then I saw this on a PS4 render:

I was startled by the difference. I then started to consider what else was different. Other than the superfluous "boob jiggle", what else was drastically improved over the PS3?

    * The Slime King Crown doesn't "wiggle" on the PS3, it stands stationary on your head.
    * The S-Rank mobs, as well as Odin and Behemoth still don't render very quickly. (Even with all of the workarounds.)
    * Clothing doesn't "swish" the same way between the systems. (I had never seen the Spring Skirt swish before!)
    * The load times into instances and between teleports was much, much faster.

I know that these are silly little things to compare, but they made a large enough difference to me personally that it really changed how I viewed the PS3 and its limitations.

    Edit:
Looking between these now... I was initially focused solely on the snowflake outlines, but I failed to notice how much more texture EVERYTHING had now...

    Sure?
Many of them seem to be independent from the PS3. Like the open-world dungeon. There is really no difference between a open-world dungeon and a open-world field. So even with no PS3 there would be still no open-world dungeon.

Often, when they mention data limitations, it has nothing to do with PS3 or whatever system you're using. What they're referring to is the data that has to be sent back and forth between the client and the server. Adding one extra option for one player seems like a minor thing. Multiply that by the hundreds of thousands of players that the servers are communicating with constantly, and those little bits add up.

Best example was couples nights ago when Yoshida was explaining why the enemy list doesn't have target markers. Out of all the UI items, the enemy list has the highest refresh rate, as close to real time as possible. Target markers other, not as critical items are on a lower tier, being refreshed maybe only a 3rd as often. Sure, they could have target markers set to real time refresh like the enmity lists, but to do so they'll have to look for savings as well.

You can only fit so many cars into a road that wide. Simply adding more cars without redirecting the traffic or flow just creates congestion.

All right, I admit that I like being able to see that leather gives more boob support than cloth, and heavy armor gives the best chest protection.

I'll give you a simple answer OP, the original game had open maps, and by open i mean, no zones. why do you think we have zones now? and that's not all, the game has a big lack of open world content because more players and events occurring in the open world would make a PS3 explode. And going back to beta, when we asked for more emotes and things like other mounts as companions, SE said no because memory limitations... well which memory? the memory saved in the servers for a few animations is not a problem, a PC doesn't have memory limitations unless it's too old, and the new generation of consoles are just like PCs. And last, SE already said they will drop support for ps3 in the future, most likely with the second expansion.

So yes, PS3 can hold the game back, while the limitations we have now are not directly caused by the ps3, but by a very short time to rebuild and launch the game, it will irremediably hold our possibilities from now.

That they change the seemless maps into zones they announced since 2011 in the first 2.0 announcement.

The current maps in FINAL FANTASY XIV are not only massive, but allow for seamless passage across wide expanses of the realm.
In order to maintain this seamlessness, however, we were forced to heavily reuse assets, resulting in static, repetitive areas.
To provide our users with areas that feel fresh and dynamic throughout the extended lifespan of the game, we are both revamping and redesigning area maps. We hope that this, in turn, will equate to increased opportunities for adventure.
    • Abolishing seamless areas to allow for more dynamic map design
    • Implementing at least three unique themes to each area
    • Complete overhaul of enemy and object placement using revamped development tools
We will continue to balance and improve existing maps to ensure an exciting, stress-free experience while playing during the months leading up to the unveiling of the new Eorzea.

This was also no PS3 limitation, because we have a lot of mounts and new emotes. it was more a beta limitation (don't bring all stuff before the launch).
And for other mounts as companions, they say no because there were no plans to bring other companions than GC Chocobo and self-breeded Chocobos (coming with golden saucer, i think) for this.
