PS3 a real problem or not

Is the PS3 really holding back 14, or is it server-side packet sizes?

I proudly play in PS3 and until i can afford a PS4, i will continue to play on PS3.

what i want to know: Is the PS3 really holding back the game or is this just a fictitious and blatant lie that certain PC elite players tell us console players because they are scared that servers are the real enemy and not the limitations of the console?

I remember back to an old live letter in which Yoshi said that the console wasn't holding back development.

I want the truth. i want a reply from the Dev team or one of the Forum mods explaining the real story because im tired of being attacked by other players for being
    on PS3.

I want to look at person who is trying to belittle me and say the real problem is them
    or
that the problem isn't even relevant to what console or pc you play on but something
    with the servers.

The PS3's hardware limitations are most certainly holding things back.

There have been several replies (from devs) about what is considered mandatory MMO stuff not available due to console "memory limitations".

It's not a surprise. The PS3 for example launched in 2006. Would be rather ignorant to think devs can develop freely without having to think about PS3's "limitations" or in community words: outdated hardware.

I wouldn't worry too much if they ever decide to drop PS3 support it will just shift to PS4 limitations.

It just seems like the same old thing just like back in FF11
PC players hating on PS2. thing is FF11 is still supporting PS2

just change out PS2 for PS3, and in a few years PC Elitist players will say the same thing about PS4

exept the ps3 have 256mo of ram.... and believe me it's a huge stop for many feature.
it's easy to check how many memory use recent game for see how it can become a trouble.

the hardware hit the game badly... and anyway, you can say it will not happend, Yoshida did confirm it one more time while the fanfest. you can expect the first expansion after this... don't dream too much about it.

I played on PS3 from launch until May. Then I bought a PS4 and opted for the free upgrade. The difference in graphics, frame rate, and overall feel was incredible. It's so worth it to upgrade to at least the PS4. Yes, PC elitists will cry PS4 limitations as soon as PS3 version gets dropped. But that's just silly. The PS4's hardware will never be an issue in the lifetime of this game.

list the known, things that are FACTS
The PS3 has a combined total of 7 SPE's which run at approximatley 3.2 GHZ per SPE, coupled with 256MB of system memory and 256MB of GPU memory.

This is very very very small.

Your average consumers PC will have at least 512MB > 1024MB of GPU Memory, and 4-8GB of System Memory, with a fairly decent Quad-Core CPU at around 3.4GHZ.

    Your average MMO will consume around 1GB of memory with ease, the amount of tweaks, adjustments, cutbacks and considerations that are taken to accomodate the PS3 drastically hold back the game in terms of;

    •Area Size
    •UI Capabilities
    •Character Count
    •Complex Systems/Effects
    •Model/Animation/Sound Data
(Only to name a few, I can list more if you require)

Basically any action/design/development is constantly wrapped around the PS3s hardware specifications.

"We want to add an Alliance UI, but only have [X] amount of memory left to work with in the UI to accommodate all platforms. Let's axe; [X] from the UI to make room"

This leads to adjustments to how the UI looks, functions and it's overall design.

You can apply this to anything in the game. Sadly the PS3 does hold the game back in what they can do, and will continue to do so for at least another year or so.

The game barely runs on a PS2 now, and imposes significant performance issues and bugs simply due to the bleeding edge hardware limitations on the already beaten down and adjusted game.
It's only supported in Japan now, NA/EU versions are no longer available.

It held back a fair number of things that FFXI could've adjusted over the years.

Did it make the game any less fun? No.
Could they have added some more complex and fresh content if they'd dropped it earlier? Yes.

    ^ This.

    With an 8-Core AMD CPU, 8GB of shared GDDR5 Memory, the PS4 has a lot of breathing room and performs perfectly fine, if and when the PS3 support is dropped the PS4 and PC client will significantly reduce the development team woes of;

"We don't have the hardware capabilities to do this"

While yes, PS3 is holding back some aspects of the game. Majority of complaints I see against it are misconstrued or outright wrong. The only real areas of the game that the PS3 is holding back development is raid size, UI elements, and zone size. Everything else such as draw distance, animations, textures, character details, etc. fall under graphic settings and exist on multiple settings, making that argument moot since same argument could be made that lowest PC settings are holding the game back.

What I mostly see is people blaming PS3 limitations for issues that Devs say they can't do at this time. Many people translate this into meaning the PS3 can't handle that feature, when in actuality it most likely means the dev team is overworked and doesn't have the resources to improve or implement said feature into the game at this time.

And yes, as much as it's annoying to keep reading the same whine threads about PS3 over and over again, it's an almost guaranteed certainty that as soon as PS3 support is dropped, the same threads will be replaced with PS4 limitation ones, and as soon as DX11 client goes live, we'll start seeing DX9 limitation threads.

Edit: Also it doesn't matter how much attention community tries to bring to the few PS3 limitations, SE won't drop support for it until the cost of maintaining support is either lower than the profits they make from it, or so low as to be negligible, and I can assure you, the cost/profit ratio for PS3 is something SE is monitoring very closely.
