There is a reason it's that cheap. Mainly because it's coming to the end of its lifespan as a console. If the console starts to hold back what the dev's want to do, they'll be stupid NOT to drop it.
They would have done it already. Obviously.
Forum white knights they are sooo stronk!!! "stop ps3 support or I quit" but yeah, wont happen. Addictedd!!!!!
No. They wouldn't have. In interviews Yoshi-P has explicitly stated they're holding onto it now but after the expansion they will begin evaluating dropping support. This is straight from the horses mouth the lead producer of the game. Even at the Vegas Fan Festival when someone asked about our chocobos doing a fat chocobo summon Yoshi was cracking jokes about how the ps3 couldn't handle it. The only reason the ps3 got a version of the game is because they were promised one 5 years ago and square didn't want to fail on it's promise. Nothing more. Nothing less. Not a tacit agreement that the ps3 isn't a limitation in any way.
You can't call people here white knights when they are simply repeating things the dev team itself has said. Ps3 support will go away someday and it will likely be before the 2nd expansion.

While there are limitations people gotta stop hating on players who choose to play on that platform. Clearly there is a substantial enough player base to warrant continued support so you all are just gonna have to get over it :P also I know some wicked awesome raiders and casuals alike on ps3 who do just fine with these limitations.
2006. The PS3 came out 8 years ago. Yes. It's holding the game back.

Compare the hardware specs of the PS3 with the PS4's and the general(ly available) specs of today's PCs and you will get your answer (hint: yes, it is holding back development). Nobody's gonna be able to give you a specific list of content/features that had to be curbed or held back just because of the PS3, since only the dev team has that knowledge, but many have pointed in the right direction in their answers already.
As for what Yoshi himself says... I do think we should've learnt by now to take it with a pinch of salt (COUGHpersonalhousingCOUGHcashshopCOUGH). Yes, he is "The God" of all things FFXIV, but as such and as a public figure who's at the center of most (if not all) public events, he's just as much a PR person as well. He does have a product to sell - to potential new customers too, and not only inform the regular playerbase about changes and new things. Anything that could cast a shade on that is apparently not said until the last minute.

This isn't a player issue, it is a SE issue.
SE is deciding for everyone that all platforms must be equal, regardless of QOL if it gives any type of "advantage".
I know a lot of players that play on PS3 and understand the limitations. However, you also have a minory that is going to whine that "XX Platform has unfair advantages".
This is a lessons learned from XI. To this day it is still running a PS2 port with DX8 on PC. XI is a perfect example of limitation and not being solely Graphics, its a QOL issue. UI improvements are heavy QOL focused.
SE needs to get over this. PS3 is a standard bare minimum platform. PS4 and PC should not be held back due to this at all.
SE made the PS3 version to forfill a promise from 2006. Ppl need to remember that.

The main notable hindrance of the PS3 currently for future game design is no large scale content. Why? PS3 only renders roughly 30 models max, and alliances take up 24 of those slots already. You already see the problem in effect in CT on the second boss when it cuts out the pots or distant adds just to keep within the limit.
Who also knows how much time they spend during development to ensure all the content they're creating fits within the restraints of the PS3's hardware.
I know it's a bit cleche but a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
Both PS4 and PC have many more resources available to call on, PS3 is redlining.
The PS3 has a GPU with 256MB of GRAM. My dad's old computer I played 10 years ago with a white, discolored case and a tube monitor has a GPU with 512MB of GRAM.
Anyone can spend $35 on a secondhand 6770 and plop it into their mother's dual-core computer and get better performance than a PS3 will have. But while people play on a PS3, square can't just treat it like a low-end PC, because there's a large group of users playing at those exact specifications on that system, they have to optimize for it.
It's fair to say you like playing with a controller or a console, but a PC can use a controller, and there's a better option for console. Treating your 8 year old console as still modern and trying to say it doesn't need an upgrade is like saying your flip phone from 2006 can do everything your smartphone from 2014 can do. Technology evolves, it gets expensive, but we can't keep acting like forcing games to run on less than 1GB of RAM to save a small amount on hardware is ideal.
