I think in terms of the computer world, the PS3 is obsolete technology. The PS3's operating system was rough, it had trouble with large file size game saves. If anyone has played Skyrim or Fallout games on the PS3 you know what I'm talking about. Once the save file sizes starting getting large the console would implode, lag, freezes, hard restarts. I know everyone said it wasn't true, that it wasn't the console, but you could tell in patches of those games that the graphics were "dumbed" down to try and free up memory. Those games were large open world maps, the only loading was when you went into a building, dungeon, etc. The PS3 is almost at its life limit of 10 years. Start saving, a dollar here a dollar there, get there eventually and get a PS4, and you'll wonder why you were playing on a PS3.
There's always. Santa, Father Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, or whatever it is that suits your fancy.
They couldn't add a HAIRSTYLE in FFXI because of PS2.
It will eventually reach this point with PS3, it's inevitable with the beauty of content they're creating.
I really appreciate that someone posted the screenshot comparison of the graphics difference between ps3 and ps4. When I changed, I felt I was playing a completely different game!
OP, I doubt SE will offer a statement on how the ps3 limits development since they do not want to alienate a good portion of their subscribers. I too am VERY tired of hearing "ps3 limitations" as an excuse. It's a poor excuse since many play on low end pcs and, I'll be honest, my ps4 blows them out of the water on things I can easily tell like lag, loading times, and graphics. :/ Yet no one says "low end pc limitations". =_=
Memory! Every single thing that needs to be kept track of takes memory. Every single thing on your screen takes memory. Recently there was a post about the things community would like to be added to the UI. Reply was: there is a limit of how many things we can display in each section. Probs because of memory. The only reason ps3 has lasted so long is because the console is highly optimized peace of hardware that runs code that is meant only for it. But there are limitations how much you can gain just by optimizing if you don't have actual resources. (And not even talking about that there is no point in making graphics improvements because PS3 just can't take it).
Also someone was mentioning that they are still able to add some stuff even though it's ps3. Yes. Because they probably developed some stuff with overhead. But most important is that most of the stuff can be kept in storage while it is not used and loaded only when needed (loading times for PS3). While if you had abundance of RAM you could just put it in RAM and load it from there when you actually need it.
PS4 shall never have these issues. Because it is basically on par with high-end PCs nowdays and taking into high level of optimization that consoles have the FF14 will die before PS4 is pushed to it's limits. Another matter however is that as i've understood from devs is that there is some amount of data that PS versions actually need to store on PSN servers. And Sony has allocated specific amount of space to each user, where as PC players data goes directly to SE servers. So the only thing that i could see limiting PS4 is the PSN space (i don't even know if the space allocation are the same for PS3 and PS4).
Of course ppl might say - but you can give PC players more options and cut down on ps3. However, if you have ever written code you know what a time-sink it is to maintain several branches of software. You DO want to keep them as uniformed as possible else the maintenance and development just blows the roof. So implementing drastically different feature sets for PC, PS4 and PS3 would just not be feasible.
If one does not have the PC requirements for this game then he just can't play it in any reasonable way. (When you see a new beautiful PC game coming out and see the requirements and find that you wont meet them, do you expect the devs to downgrade the game to run on your machine? Would you be complaining on their forums about "I can't run this on my pc. Please make the game worse?")

I love all these people saying, "Switch off PS3, you will love it!" I played 1.#, no PS3 to be had. I played the 2.0 beta, again no PS3 till the last beta phase. 2.0 rolled out, I was on the PS3 like white on rice and have never looked back. Don't get me wrong, while my computer had problems running 1.# (who didn't), it thoroughly handles 2.0 like a boss. I just don't care. I'd been waiting for the PS3 version since the promise of a PS3 beta back after the launch of XIII (you know, when there were codes for the PS3 beta included). Only reason I started playing 1.# when I did was the Legacy promotion. I've seen this game at it's prettiest and, yes, it's pretty. And the Highlander boobs are very out of control. But for me, that's all superfluous. It's all about the story and playability and the PS3 handles that just fine.
I wouldn't call a game that drops to 20 fps or lower when the slightest bit of action happens on screen "playable".I love all these people saying, "Switch off PS3, you will love it!" I've been playing on the PS3 for... a year now? Obviously having 30~ FPS doesn't mean a thing to me. Though, what I consider playable is clearly not in the same category as what you're referencing. I tried the whole mouse and keyboard thing in the 2.0 beta and made heavy use of the controller in 1.# and late 2.0 beta. I hate playing with mouse and keyboard, give me a controller any day. Yes, I get that I lose alot in the massive collections of hotbars not available with controllers. So what. Sometimes less is more. The only way I'll stop playing on the PS3 is when they stop supporting it, period.
A second hand ps3 is like what, 40 euros? People can get on FF14 for 40 euros + game cost?! WOW that's awesome xD Se would be stupid to cancel ps3 support.
