I will quit if it goes free to play or becomes consumed by micro-transactions. I love FF but I have standards.

I'll just throw my hat in here and say there is no need for this game to have a cash shop.
Name changes, and server transfers aside.
Retainers, vanity gear, mounts, minions. These should all be atainable in the game.
Let people posture the achievments they have made not the size of their wallets.

I like the sub model of course, because it tends to keep trolls, etc. out (But not enough of them.) As for it going free to play, since when has free to play always meant pay to win? There are two "Indie" MMORPGs that survive completely on donations and have no cash shop and are free to play: PlaneShift and The Mana World.
Some games disallow you to trade cash shop items too, but not enough do that... so that's an indrect way of making a game pay2win. (See neverwinter, etc.)

It depends on how much enjoyment that I continue to get out of the game. But if they were to go the same route that SOE did with their free to play models (I'm looking at you EverQuest II, in particular), then I would leave.
I have played some free to play games that were pretty enjoyable: pre-Version 9 FlyFF, both Myth Wars, Tales of Pirates, the now defunct Secret of the Solstice and I managed decently without investing in their cash shops. (In the case of both Myth Wars, I couldn't get something from there even if I had wanted to, due to the publisher, IGG, being based in Europe and not having a wider varieties of payment options).
I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.

No I wouldn't quit. I would choose not to spend tons of cash on stuff ,but I would still play it
"A learned warrior who uses Arithmeticks to analyze natural phenomena and pinpoint magickal attacks."
Yes, i would quit playing FFXIV if is became a Free to Play game with no subscription.

Could this be because they are carving content out of the game to make us pay for it again down the line?
Imo it *should* be one or the other. SE is going to see if they can blur the lines though and see if they can double dip in sub fees and a cash shop. I'm for a sub model. If it goes f2p I'm out. There's other games out there I can pay a one time fee for and not get watered down content in return.

I've never actually played a f2p game for more than a couple days at most, so not long enough to experience the pay to win aspects of them. Loved FFXI though, quit after Abyssea after the changes to the game got to be too much for me to enjoy it anymore. I eventually started XIV mainly because its a Final Fantasy, not so much because it's pay to play but I assumed that it would be set up pretty much the same way XI was there. I guess I do tend to favor Pay to Play though, because paying a fixed-rate sub every month can be a lot cheaper than being nickle and dimed every time you turn around. Wouldn't enjoy that at all.
As far as the cash shop right now, I don't mind that they offer a few minions, a mount and some old seasonal event costumes that don't offer anything to gameplay outside of pure vanity, I'm actually glad they offer things like server transfers, name changes and fantasias, and never minded the extra retainers since in XI you could pay per month for additional mule characters that you could use for storage and whatnot, and just mail items and gil back and forth between characters on your account. Most people I knew had between 2 and 4 mules, some had more if they got into heavy crafting etc. Never really got why some people had a problem with being charged for extra retainers, mainly because of that. Main thing I'm having a problem with right now is the two-seater mount, the idea that being able to give your friends piggy back rides on your mount if you're playing the same open-world content seems to be a premium feature that will always be gated behind cash transactions is a little too close to Pay to Win for my comfort.
So I guess my answer is, I prefer subscription-based games, the free to play model just doesn't seem to hold my interest, but I love FF series and if this game ever went F2P I'd probably end up sticking around for a while to see how things went but I'm not sure how long I'd continue to play after. Would depend on where they went with it and the overall quality of the playerbase once that change was made. But I'd rather see it either continue to be strictly P2P with every item or feature behind a paywall having a free alternative you could earn in-game, or just go F2P if they're going to start trying to introduce premium gameplay features that don't have free alternatives. I doubt I stick around very much longer if they try for a p2p/p2w model.
