Off topic a bit, but this is yet another large issue I have with the relic/Zodiac quests. The challenge has been removed in favor of a gil sink. And this is on top of several layers of previous time grinds. I want a relic just like everyone else, but I can't justify the means to that end. That's just me though.
Still, if getting the will-be best weapon in the game requires I pay upwards of what buying a large housing plot would cost, I'd rather just get the large housing plot. I like to raid anyways, and would prefer the alternatives in place, however transient they may be.

^ cant justify starting the Zodiak quest either especially at this time. I start now by the time im finished, expansion will be out soon enough that it makes it meh. Dont even need the novus.

I too have been stuck on the Novus for about 2 months now due to not having the gil to buy up the materia needed, however I am not frustrated with the process. That being said, I craft 1 whole suit of ilvl 45-50 HQ armor every night and spend 40 minutes spirit bonding it. The materia I get are usually 3's but they do sell pretty well on the market. I get 10 lvl 3 materia in 40 minutes, sell it overnight and buy 1-2 materia I need the next night. This lines up nicely with doing my daily mysterious map and maybe some hunts. Sure it's slow but it is how the game was engineered. SE does not want people to be "handed" gear and this is a time/money sink that is not required.
Novus is hardly crashing the market. More like some of the new 110 crafted gear being able to hold 5 tier 4 savage aims is the problem. Just think on that....imagine overmelding a 5th savage aim 4..... We NEED grade 5 material now, in all honesty.
Things that are more in demand cost more. I don't know what you think Square can do about basic economics.
Make other stats viable so that everyone doesn't go to Crit and Det for Novus stats? I mean the one's that don't are basically tanks, who usually go parry and accuracy, and even then it's hard to say Parry is necessarily better than Determination.
Not only would making other stats more desirable ease the demand on Savages, but it might encourage people to spirit bind because they aren't rolling the dice on two particular materia IVs dropping.

Best solution would have been to not even have created the materia system to begin with. Sadly, the relic quest line has never been about challenge, and always about time sink (and gil sink). It really shouldn't be any surprise, because the relic quest line has basically been the go-to method of forcing players to experience all content, especially older content. It was only a matter of time before the relic quest line highlighted the "amazing" materia system (it spent more than enough time highlighting FATEs, old dungeons, etc.).
Don't be too surprised when Hunts get mixed into the relic quest line, or any other system not already a part of it.
Relics requiring you to beat HM primals wasn't forcing people to experience old content and was in fact a prerequisite to progressing to the end-game, BCoB. Zenith was admittedly trivial and stupid. However, everything since obtaining the original relic was pretty much a time and gil sink as you describe.
Materia would be less of a garbage design mechanic if they removed the RNG aspect and just made overmelds require progressively more materia of the given grade to achieve the desired effect. First overmeld would need x2, second would need x4, third overmeld would need x8, and fourth overmeld would need x16. At the very least it'd give people a better scope at how much a piece of gear is valued once overmelded. You can't really predict that you are going fail a 20% meld 20 times in a row.
The materia system is part of the reason crafted gear is so niche. It's really hard to go the crafted route when you look at the gil investment from the materia and the tome investment from the mats for a piece of gear that is going to get replaced after a few kills in coil or a few weeks of tome farming.
While are on the topic of bad mechanics, what about elemental resist materia and the Alchemists 2.0 2* recipes, Elemental Wards? Will these ever serve a meaningful purpose? Doubtful.

Well, the easiest way to fix this would be to make it easier to get level IV materia.
- level 90 crafted gear could go back to converting into level IV's 100% of the time
- add materia to possible dungeon loot
- make all dungeon gear up to level 70 be convertible
- Let you purchase them with Poetics tomes? Say 100 for each level IV materia of your choice. (An option for those who already have all the poetics gear they want)
