This is advice you won't use for a looong time. You won't need to ask anyone for anything until much later, and you'll know when you might want to ask. It's good advice for the future though.

"Need" "Greed" and "Pass" are typical in any mmo with a loot drop system. It's pretty self explanatory. You could also look at it as "Greed" really means "Kind of Need it" much like others have explained. Sine you're super green to an mmo, I'll try and give you some examples that might help explain the common "etiquette" governing this philosophy

When I need:
*If the drop is a obvious upgrade for the job I am playing in the particular dungeon.
*If the drop is almost identical to what I'm currently wearing, and my spiritbond is 100% I'll need. I usually convert it on the spot and equip the new piece to begin the spirit bonding process again.
*If the drop isn't something I need for stats, but is a high priced commodity on the market, I'll most likely need it. BEWARE: Some people really look down on needing for currency. The counter argument is "Someone else could use that for a subclass and winning the drop by greeding it is more fair to everyone else". Develop your own opinion about "needing" on things in a random group.

You can use the advice to help decide what You would personally do when "greeding" and "passing". Hope it explains things a little. Good luck and welcome to an mmo \o/
