Probably a mix between classic & hardcore.
I can play for really long stretches at a time, and I usually only dedicate my gaming time to one or two games at a time.

But I'm not really quite as good as some of the harder-core people out there though. Not even close. (e.g. I don't have a great interest in playing the market/crafting, so I won't have the resources for penta-melds, for example. Also, I don't have every class levelled up, nor do I dabble in things like the sightseeing log.)

A mix between Classic, Roleplay and Explorer.

~I add a tangible value to my games of choice and the items or companions (whether they be NPCs like my Chocobo or PCs like my FCmates). I sink a lot of energy and emotion into them.
~As such i will create new dimensions to those items and expand on them with background stories and personalities.
~I despise spoilers and want to try everything new out peacefully and at my own pace. Usually the pace is slow when it involves lore or story and usually it is very fast when it comes to battle.

I mostly fit into all of these types: The Star, Hard Core Gamer, Adventurer, The Story-liner, The Role-player, Action, Older gamer.

I Typically play RPG's, and I love to explore and see everything the game has to offer. Modern games make this quite diofficult actually, with games like Fallout New vegas, if you make friends with one guy, then later on as soon as you step foot in an area they will be firing at you and you'll have no chance to talk em down. Or games like Lightning Returns where there's a timer counting down the whole time.

I still get together and play board games with friends, started gaming with Dungeons and Dragons etc. I play a lot of what I'll call modern Boardgames, some of my favourites being the Arkham Horror games.

I strive to be the best, especially in an online setting, but not at the cost of my own integrity, and I really enjoy helping other people out. For me, there's no point in being the best if you aren't using it. My G/F did a different gamer personality type thing, and it labelled me as "The Guardian" because I get online and start doing things to help out other people, and to a certain extent, I only get better gear for myself so I am better equipped to help out other people.

But then, my crafted set of Wootz Plate is all about me and my own epicness. That cercles back to my completionist, and independance. I want to gather mky own materials, to craft my own gear, and show off how awesome I am!

Mix of everything, if I am close to anything listed its Classic/True, Hardcore, and Tech Gamer.

I grew up with Atari/Nintendo, Arcades, have fixed and repaired Arcade Machines, Arcade Circuit boards, Pinball Machines and consoles for 25 years. Worked in the Industry at a young age and grew out of it as arcades died in the late 90s and just doing repairs & restoration as side work.

If Arcades taught me anything, it's challenge and the appreciation of all types of genres.

Mix of "true" gamer and story-liner I guess. Bits of all of them though ;P

I like just about every type of game out there; shooters, fighters, jrpgs, wrpgs, strategy, action adventure, platformers, simulation (well, to an extent), puzzle games, you name it. There's probably at least one game I really like in any genre.

Not really a achievement/trophy hunter though, but if it's reasonably obtainable and won't take me 6 more playthroughs to get I will most likely go for it (only ever "completed"/platinumed 3 games, Mass Effect 2 and 3, and Tales of Xillia).

But the best games in my opinion are the ones that have a great story with great character interactions (in my opinion you can NOT have a compelling story without good character interactions). And probably the best story in a game I've ever experienced is The Last of Us. Watershed moment for the industry in my opinion.

    I'm a lifer.
Been playing games most my life and seen the evolution Atari to today. Watched as games evolved from simple challenges to interactive movies. The wide berth of gaming genres is now so great that to say someone is a "Gamer" isnt even a clear term. It can mean anything from someone who only plays sport games and always buys the current years edition of the NHL games to someone who surfs the Indi playground of innovative concepts for the next best thing.

    I'm a Casual Hardcore
I play casually but I'm serious about the games I play and strive to be the best I can be. I don't have the time I used to have growing up to dedicate to games since I now have lots of RL commitments (Family, Job, Kids, Wife, and community activities I partake in) but in my spare time, I love to sit down and play. I'm a quick learner, I know my way around a controller, I'm able to pick up pretty much any game and play it. I can always improve and I'm willing to take advise but push back against rude and abrasive players. I enjoy being competitive but not at the expense of another. I would rather build up than tear down, its more challenging and rewarding to help someone succeed than to point out their flaws and tear them down.

    I am not a label.
I am me, there is so much more to me than any one label can sum up. I'm a lover, I'm a fighter, I'm a thinker, I'm a follower, it all depends on what we are talking about. I can admit when I'm wrong but will defend myself and my opinions when I feel they make the most sense. I will happily change my opinion through discussion but will not even bother if it becomes combative and personal of if I feel the points I'm making are being ignored. I'm sure most of us are this way and its frustrating to see so many people sum up an entire persons character in a single post. We are all more than a single label. Lets stop using labels to divide ourselves and treat each other as the individuals we are.

    I'm a Classic\True gamer.
    I'm a Casual Gamer.
    I'm a Blood Rager
    I'm a Merchant, a Star, a Story liner.
I'm an Adventurer, a Romancer, a Hard Core Gamer.
    I'm a Role-Player
    I'm an Action Gamer
    I'm an Older Gamer
I'm a Short Attention Span Gamer

No one label fits all situations and depending on what we are talking about those labels can change. Stay classy my friends!

I think most people replying are missing the heart of the question.
Of course we can exhibit all types of playing games. We are, of course, human. So we are versatile by nature, we have to be to survive. But you would be lying to yourself if you dont believe you have a pre-dominant type. Think of it like a buffet, when you first see the line-up, what do you find yourself naturally gravitating towards more often than the other selections.

When i first approach a game, I tend to exhibit the:

    The Story-liner
This gamer just want's the be immersed in an enthralling story-line with interesting characters that are facing tough decisions. This type of gamer likes to find answers.. and fast and absolutely loves 20 minute cutscenes and FMV's. Once the end credits are rolling the game is beaten and the disk is already being taken out... unless there is a secret ending after the credits. They care not for trophies, bragging rights or unlocks.

I have adapted to be the competitive gamer, who likes crushing his other player-character opponents. But that is hardly a type I feel most comfortable in. Great question

But the OP is very vague in what they are talking about. With so many genres out there I would have a different label depending on what genre and even depending on what game specifically.

    What is a "Gamer"

Not really. For some of us who have been playing and around games for a long time. Many grow out of this and become more open and less narrowed. Just like some become the opposite and stick to a certain type, genre, or don't want or accept change in someone they specifically like.

There is a type not listed I encounter all the time for example.

The Friendly Gamer: Literally only plays games with friends or socially.
