I've been meaning to put this out there for a year or so, but I'm wondering if the names bane and contagion were switched accidentally in the English version of the game. Was this intended? It really seems like it was mixed up.

Now that you mention it ...
Wow... I never actually took a step back and thought of the definitions and contexts of those titles until now.
Well played SE. Well played.
FFXI: Marato - Quetzalcoatl BLM/SMN/BRD
FFXIV: Mac May - Exodus MNK/SMN/BRD
The only SMN attack to get a very different name in English is Fester (Miasma Burst). Bane and Contagion are both direct translations from the Japanese names; they weren't swapped or anything.
That said, it's not impossible that they got mixed up from the beginning... For example, the Elder Staff and Omnirod seem like they should swap names, considering appearance and which jobs equip them.
Just like "Sneak Attack" makes no sense from the front, and "Trick Attack" makes no sense from the rear. Maybe mixed-up ability names are an easter egg or something.
