Lowering settings might help. Also, x2 AA seems to perform better than no AA. Make sure your general draw quality is not set above 8. Also, there are a few threads in here that point out optimizations for ATI cards that you can make in the Catalyst Control Panel. I have nVidia, so I can't say what the ATI tweaks are off the top of my head.
As for the card getting hotter, its a different computer, with different air flow. Perhaps smaller fans, or even older fans that just don't spin as fast because barrings are a little worn. Could be any number of things. Even a slightly different processor within the same line of processors can change the ambient heat enough to see a noticeable increase in temperature.
