at around levels 15 to 20 the story lines for starting characters merge. if I have developed an alt and like it better than my main, can I continue the main quest line with my alt? in effect switching my main for my alt?

If by alt you mean a different character then you just do the story on that one instead of the other one. If you mean by alt as another class then yes you are free to swap between them.
yes, I meant my secondary class. Thanks.
You would need to leve up your secondary job to the level needed to continue the main story. Level of class/job is the only limiting factor on what you pick to do it with. As it is your character doing the story, not your job/class.
I take it that the only way to see all three beginning parts of the story is with three separate characters? I am on the free trial right now and I am looking at getting the game, though I might wait for the xpac to come out.
Yes, only with three separate characters because the beginning of the main story depends on which City-state you pick, which in turn depends on your main class (marauder starts in Limsa, conjurer starts in Gridania, pugilist starts in Ul'dah, etc.)
Thats what I thought. I don't think I would only play one character anyways. I have no concept for one that can do everything. I would most likely make a caster type, rogue type and a warrior type though I could see making a knight type separate from the warrior type.
It's worth mentioning that most jobs are going to want abilities from classes that might not fit the theme you're going for.Thats what I thought. For example, Black Mage needs Archer abilities to play the job at full capacity. Paladin needs Stoneskin from Conjurer.
