Technically:



Ankle – cuts off at the top of the foot and the back only goes up to the dip of the ankle
Crew – extended a few inches above the foot, usually stopping below the muscle of the calf – standard sock size
Knee – Stop under the knee at the front and go to the crease in the back of the knee, usually held up by the calf
Overknee – Stop at the top of the knee, or an inch or so above. Usually held up by tension of the knit/elastic
Thigh-high – rises up to cover half to most of the thigh, either held up by the muscle of the upper/center thigh, elastic or garters/garter belts
Pantyhose – fully covers and extends to the waist, held up by elastics and the narrowing of waist.

Some higher versions, such as pantyhose and thigh-highs can be patterned to resemble lower sizes with clever use of solid and sheer patterning. Overknee socks tend to be lumped together with knee socks when they are quite different, with overknees being more in the sexy side while knee socks have more of a preppy, sporty vibe.
