I do like video games. But even in video games there shouldn't be a feeling of spinning one's wheels.
FFXIV's feels stagnant and invalidating to me, plus the things i do not like about the game are not going to improve. That doesn't mean I hate all gaming.

That may be but the argument put forth seemed rather vague in a way that seemed like it fit more than just this game.
You're playing a modern style MMO and it's not trying to hide that identity either. When it comes down to it even if I take your argument and put it on FFXIV specifically I still have to wonder why you're playing this game. It seems to me you have certain expectations that this game was going to fail to meet by virtue of the kind of game it was from day one. Do you often eat oranges expecting it to taste like apples then get annoyed at the orange for failing to taste like an apple?
You also say substance, but I have to wonder about that too. The game is simply something to do. The people are the substance and the game is something to do with those people. If you expect the game to deliver everything in an MMO then you're going to have a bad time. The gear treadmill can continue forever as long as I have fun friends to ride it with. It never feels like a grind with friends around.
I have played since 1.0. I have not played a wow clone before. I didn't know I was going to be still turning in tomestones for gear after milling through the df, dalies and hunts even sounded welcome the first I heard of it.
But in practice the systems of the game become overly tedious and dauntingly repetitive. Coupled with the lack of recovery and confusion from most endgame battles and unhelpful players. I tried sticking with it, finding "the depth in content", but Atma and Scob showed me how sick of it I was, down to the last primadonna PLD.

Sounds like you didn't find enough friends to ride the treadmill with. I'm not surprised you aren't having a good time. You keep expecting the game to hand you the whole experience when the people are half of it. Having a horizontal progression system wouldn't change anything about that.
Probably should have done some research. I read a few articles before beta where Yoshi specifically said they were using a WoW model. It's not like this info was hidden or hard to find.
Right? It was more grindy than 2.0-2.4 and had even worse RNG from everything I know about it.

It wasn't a wow clone, and brought (then) new activities. And yes i took a break with it too after it went f2p. I've waited for welcome changes during both games like everyone else. I've waited long enough.
Way to make assumptions on my experience. I enjoyed playing with a lot of the friends I met in the LSes and FCs I have been a part of. This game was one major reason I got on social media. And I still enjoy hearing from them and their achievements.Sounds like you didn't find enough friends to ride the treadmill with. I'm not surprised you aren't having a good time. There is a difference between friends and community. And the game failed on its own failings.

It pains me to admit it but I have to agree with OP a bit, I was really excited when they announced NIN so I came back a few months before the 2.4 patch but I'm kinda getting burned out of the game already, sure the new class is fun to play and I love the story quest but it's starting to become a never ending cylce where I log in, do Ixal dailies while waiting for Duty Roulettes to pop, finish the duty and sing up for the next one and so on.
I've been doing that since I came back EVERY SINGLE DAY because it's the only thing to do if you want to cap tomes and get the new gear and every patch is the same thing all over again, finish story quest, finish Hildy quest, finish moogle quest (new addition), clear the 3 new dungeons and primal fight, grind for next tier gear... every patch the same thing over and over again.
I like the game but it kinda gets boring after a while of doing the same thing every day. (Do you know the definition of insanity?)

I am just trying to understand you. You don't like going for shiny things and doing repetitive, tedious tasks, but 1.xx was basically a blueprint on how to excel in all of those aspects. Keep fighting primals till -something- dropped. Keep doing CC/AV till -something- dropped. Spam Hamlets all day till -something- dropped.
I didn't say anything of the sort. I said I found more to do, and I did not say the word "excel".I am just trying to understand you. I fact, I simply said I played since 1.0 and when it updated, seemed to have more novel stuff compared to what we were doing.
I also said I took a break from playing it. So no, I don't see it as perfect in that regard either.
