Huton or Fūton? Ninjutsu skill translation.

So I was talking to my friend about how this was mistranslated the name for it on the japanese client is 風遁 which spells out Fūton in romaji. But on the NA client its Huton.

So my question is, is the US translation intended or an error?

In two words, you can spell it with H or F depending on the romanization style and long wovels are not always reflected easily with accents depending on your keyboard layout.

Definitely this.

"Huton" may not exactly be standard romanization, but it's enough of a shift not to immediately make the average English-speaker think of a sleeping mat.

There is no "official" romaji. ふ can be hu or fu. Neither is wrong. What I find more interesting is the lack of う in there. I get that it's a localization, but it's not like they shortened suiton to suton or something.

Suiton wouldn' t be shortened because the vowel sounds are different う and い respectively, where Huton is just an elongated う sound which wouldn't require an aditional letter in english. Not always when written in romaji do elongated vowel sounds get additional letters either because they would look odd or aren't needed as much. If you look at Tokyo in Japanese hiragana, technically in English it would be spelled Tookyoo, Tohkyoh, or Toukyou. But since we speak English we might not read it correctly.
