Either way Snugglebutt correlation does not imply causation. It's still an assumption regardless of what people did or didn't know about the patch noted and coil nerfs. The fact that other MMOs were DDoS'd in an apparent spree of DDoS's does seem like the more likely answer, but even that is still an assumption.

Never said it was not an assumption. I am fully aware of the fact I am making assumptions.

Just like people assuming it's RMT behind it or people assuming it's linked to the Blizzard attacks.

DDoS at lolBlizzard expansion pack launch. They really don't know where to look and what to do more for few players number back. Fact is WoW sucks since years and its community is ways smaller than before.

So XIV has been DDoS'd I cna think of some possible motivations:

• Political: As an early post has stated, Japan and Korea had an...imfamous relationship. Other than that the attack could be an attempt to bring SE into GamerGate somehow by crashing the game and blaming the other side, but that seems unlikely
• Butthurt: The timing of the attacks coincides with 2.41, which brought with it Second Coil nerfs. Special Snowflakes tend to be very angry when their specialness is diluted. However this also seems unlikely.
• Trolling: Some People just want to watch Eorzea burn. Most likely motivation.

Attacks are most likely connected to other ddos attacks on other mmos and fansites over the last few weeks. Only motivation I can see for this is trolling, if it was a hactivist movement they would of most likely also tried to shut down jp datacenter and the lodestone. Can almost guarantee you that they were monitoring our forums during attack and having a good ol laugh at our posts.

Also as other have stated, retaliation theory for 2.41 nerfs is also highly unlikely since the attacks started two days before patch notes were released. Yes we've known for months that second coil was going to get nerfed, but no one but SE knew that 2.41 was going to be that nerf.

As I've said on sunday after actually looking at a graph that tracks it. NA was/is getting hit up the butt with a mass load of data from china. As someone said before, its probably the gil spammers. Funny thing how after dcing twice last night the annoying things were everywhere all of a sudden.
