The franchise will also have a new free phone app titled Final Fantasy Portal. The app will allow fans to check the newest information about the franchise, and will also have the Final Fantasy VIII game Triple Triad available to play within the app. By registering their Square Enix ID and playing Triple Triad, players can receive points that they can exchange for digital contents. Triple Triad will have cards with illustrations from characters throughout the franchise's history, including Final Fantasy VII's Barrett, Final Fantasy VIII's Seifer and Rinoa, Final Fantasy IX's Princess Garnet, and Final Fantasy XII's Vaan and Balthier. The mini-game will also be able to share cards with the Final Fantasy XIV online game. The date of release for the app has not been announced.

Saw this earlier today, sooooo much hype.

I'm expecting the lack of release date is because they don't want to reveal when the Gold Saucer is coming out yet. Or rather, they want to do it at Tokyo FanFest or a later live-letter where they have control over how it's announced.

I should have known better than to be surprised by this, but I'm expecting to be disappointed after this rolls out. I believe they mentioned already that there would be a Triple Triad-like card game in the upcoming Gold Saucer area, which was exciting news. But, while this app seems harmless enough on its own, I am expecting a lot of heavy cross-promotion and microtransactions. If it's not directly in FFXIV's cash shop, it will be purchases made through this app, or you'll get exclusive cards for the game by pre-ordering this or that.

It sound like Triple Triad will be a own game for iphone, with cards from different FF games.
Not that the card game that will come with Golden Saucer into FF XIV will also be Triple Triad

Then you will be delighted to hear it is! you can log into your FFXIV account and have access to all your card data and are able to join matches from your device. Which device? not sure. Outside of Japan? not sure. Avaliable on PC or PSVita? not sure...

You may be able to setup an Android virtual environment or emulate on your PC, maybe. If you're into development of mobile apps, I'm sure you know how.

I personally have ran some things on top of Windows, but that was a while ago, when I was fooling around with ChromeOS/ICS/YahooTV content creation.
