Unless you're doing 3rd Coil, capping tomes for Poetics is pointless.

While not a necessity, becoming stronger is never pointless because it allows people to defeats things faster and more smoothly. Like, take less time to defeat Sastasha's Kraken. Additionally, people may like the appearance of certain high level gear.
