First boss in Satasha HM

So I ran Satasha HM the other day with some FC mates and we came across an oddity. We were burning the first boss down without any problem when somewhere around 20% HP he started using some one hit kill attack. The attack didn't have a name and I can't find anything on guide sites mentioning it, has anyone ever seen this? Luckily it only affected one player at a time so after a few attempts we demolished it with sheer DPS but it was still pretty weird.

The tail swipe? If somebody has the slime debuff when it hits them then it will one shot them. The tail swipe tales like 99% HP and the Slime debuff does a DoT which will kill them. Just make sure people don't have the slime on them or stun Tail Swipe. Around that 20% it starts dumping slime on the whole party so if people get stacked with it that's when the problem starts.

Nope, not the tail swipe, and no one had slime on them. It was like some tail thrust, it looked like his basic attack but his tail glowed yellow and purple and it was an instakill on whoever it hit.

When his hp is lower he hits like a truck due to an attack buff and maybe gets a new attack that hits really hard? Could it be possible your tank either lost hate or just got murdered by it which let the boss go around 1-shotting people with high damage attacks?

Its called Tail Screw and it targets a random player (other than the tank I believe). Shortly before the attack he will do a slime attack which inflicts a debuff. If this debuff is not Esuna'd or Leeched, the Tail Screw will one shot that member. It is unavoidable damage but without the debuff, it will leave the member with like 1% health. So just as soon as you see the slimes go out, dispel all the debuffs and you are good to go.

When the tank gets "Prey"'d, that's your cue that Tail Screw is a'comin'. The Prey can be transferred to another party member so the tank won't get stunned. What I do as PLD, is try to transfer Prey to a melee nearby, let them get stunned, then Shield Bash Tail Screw. Sometimes Prey doesn't like to transfer so it's by no means 100% efficient.

In addition to tail screw, the first boss does have a tail impaling attacking that does about 1.2-2k damage to tanks.
It can hit for harder once the boss is enhanced but a tank should not be even close to be 1 shotted, though it may one-shot non-tanks.

The boss you should be worried about is Madison. I've done that dungeon tens of times and I STILL don't understand the mechanics. I just let the DPS do their thing while I grab adds lol. I hope Madison chokes on his tenticles.

how do you transfer the tank stun?
