Yeah, sorry about that. I forgot to finish my thought properly. Though after reading how I'm scared of having to pull too much, I'm surprised people took me in the opposite context. That should be determined by the composition of your party. two black mages in full 110, and a well-geared healer? i'm pulling as much as i can handle.
dps or healer at the required ilvl, or a lack of AOE capablility? one mob group at a time.
if a healer cannot sustain the tank for the duration of a big pull, or it would be faster to do small pulls, there is no reason to pull an entire room to the boss gate.
but none of this matters if the healer in my group says no. the tank may set the pace, but the healer has too keep me alive.
Healer friend had an issue like this yesterday, tank was doing big pulls but never used a single cooldown, when asked about it he said he didn't need them.
Those were the same people spamming hunts during 2.3, now that hunts suck they went back to ruin all dungeons. It seems that the crazies from Brayflox's Longstop Hard have gotten loose from their cage and are spreading throughout the other dungeons.
Any time I tank, I take my time. The way I see it, Tanks get to set the pace. Call it a perk of stepping up to the task. Too slow for you? Drop out or kick me and wait for another. Or better yet, level a Tank yourself. God knows we need more of them.

The issues are one of 3 things really.
1) tanks are under geared for the new dungeons (Mobs hit harder in the new dungeons then the old).
2) the healer is inexperienced or undergeared
3) you do not have enough high dmg aoe (Do not try to do mass pulls with a sch mnk and nin for example)
Normally the issue is 3 when I am not tanking. Tanks try to mass pull and the dds simply cannot deal enough aoe dmg to kill mobs before the tank runs out of buffs. If that happens the healer usually cannot keep them alive for very long.
But if possible they should be massed pulled. You end up saving 5-8mins a dungeon.

I have to tell tanks to pull more than 1 group :|
single pulls are boring, I don't like dpsing as a healer
I like to do 1 pack at a time, sometimes 2 if my cooldowns are up, specifically because i know i take minimal damage, allowing the Healer to sit in CS the whole run, effectively adding an extra DPS to the party.
Always makes me facepalm when a tank walks into an EX or HL run, pulls several trash packs at once ... And the 2 DDs are Monks. Yeah, good luck with that AoE.

Seconding this as a DPS. I can't tell you how many times I've either had to pull aggro off a healer or ended up with aggro myself because a tank pulled more than they could handle and lost hate on some of the enemies.

In MY!!! opinion. Whenever a tank is going to mass pull, gotta do a few check ins:
1- Is your DPS setup efficient for a big pull?
2- Did you ask your healer AND DPS if they're comfortable with healing/DPSing through it?
3- Do you know how to handle it? CD management, gear.
4- Do you know when it's enough?
I always perceived the tank role as a "leader" of a group. Being a leader doesn't mean "Hey, guys, DO WHATEVER I WANT OR GTFO", it means to coordinate your group to get the best results. You're going ahead, you pull, you control the flow of the fight. But, never forget that running behind you, there's a guy keeping you alive and a pair of guys that will wreck the monsters because your DPS alone will not be enough. You gotta know their limits and so yours.
More than this, I'll never understand why some tanks pull big, die, then pull big again. If it didn't work the first time when everyone's CDs were available, why would it work this time?

I stepped back into tanking today, and stunned the PUG by asking them what pace they were comfortable with doing since I'm super green, and I was thankful they were willing to go slow.
..... but is 5 to 8 minutes really worth a possibly messy and/or rage inducing run?? I'm just gonna make asking at the high level dungeons the habit. Makes for a better dynamic if you're willing to chat, anyway.
