They should just make it so you can't bypass it. unless your community rep.

I personally don't want to read multiple ideas in a signal thread.
Or a supper long explanation on how the game is broken and need this to fix it. When most of the time there maybe only one element worth changing in what maybe a well thought out idea.

I personally have hit the limit a few times myself in which case I rewrote what I was type as I was getting off topic or long winded on the topic.

The character limit is indeed stupid. The "edit post" workaround should not be necessary, nor should it be a weird "public secret" that newbies need to be told by more experienced posters.

Sometimes people want to expand on a complex idea, and 1000 characters will not allow them to get into the topic in enough detail, or explain what they mean fully. Some of us enjoy a bit of in-depth debate now and again, or want to respond to various points made by multiple posters. Having to reduce our posts to oversimplified sound bites only invites confusion, and stifles conversation.

Then don't. No one is forcing you to read or engage in any topics.

And to add to these reasons: Some of us like using proper sentences and wording that easily carries over 1000 characters, or we want to quote a particularly long (500 character) section of a post so people don't have to run back pages to find out the info because it got cut due to character constraints. I doubt that there has been a topic, that required any amount of real information, where my post before editing was less than 1600 characters on initial post.
