Sometimes people want to expand on a complex idea, and 1000 characters will not allow them to get into the topic in enough detail, or explain what they mean fully. Some of us enjoy a bit of in-depth debate now and again, or want to respond to various points made by multiple posters. Having to reduce our posts to oversimplified sound bites only invites confusion, and stifles conversation.
And to add to these reasons: Some of us like using proper sentences and wording that easily carries over 1000 characters, or we want to quote a particularly long (500 character) section of a post so people don't have to run back pages to find out the info because it got cut due to character constraints. I doubt that there has been a topic, that required any amount of real information, where my post before editing was less than 1600 characters on initial post.
