I would prefer seeing Samurai as a tank and Red Mage as the sword dps.

I like to see them as brave far east knights who protect their lords. Attacking enemies from behind next to a Ninja would seem really weird for me. It would be nice for Doma to have a tank representative since they already have dps covered with Ninja. (A healer would be neat also)

Red Mage will most likely without a doubt be a sword dps.

not to sound rude but if SAM does not become the 2nd DPS Job that uses Mail armor, since people want Sam as a Tank, then what would be the 2nd Job that use Mail armor or must Dragoon be the only Job that use Mail Armor and all future DPS job can only use cloth and leather armor only?

    On topic:

While Sam may fit for a tank the Protection of their Lords it does not always mean taking the hits for them but to aim at eliminating the threat directly. Their weapon of choice, being japanese swords, were often better maintained than their armor.

Weapons like the katana was chosen as the weapon of choice not because of defense but because it provided quick reaction to kill their enemies which would fit the theme of SAM being a DPS if Yoshi-p choose to make it a DPS.

Samurai should be a Tanks such as War, with a stance to increase it's damage out put. He can wield heavy armors, so tank seems like a better role. Tohya from Log Horizon is a Samurai tank, so is not usual to see Samurai tanking as it is a front line job.

SAM could work as a Tank or DPS honestly, but I'd rather see it as a DPS over a third Sword using Tank.

Why not make Samurai a tank and a dps? Samurai for dps and Shogun for tank?

I'd be all right with whichever role SAM falls into. The tank role would be especially interesting if the job carried over some of the debuffing effects of weapon skills from XI (Yukikaze=Blind, Gekko=Silence, Kasha=Paralyze, for example).

Recover the FFT samurai and make its spirit calling skills deeper. End of the tank/DPS discussion. Samurai will be a caster/support/debuffer class.

I always imagined SAM as a tank, especially since NIN is DPS but I guess we'll see. No matter what it ends up being I'm going to try it out, because SAM.

To add in my two cents, I think it would be good for SAM to be a DPS job, primarily due to armor.

Right now, we have several sets of armor assigned to a variety of different jobs.

Fending (Tank) -> PLD, WAR, DRK
Maiming (High DEF DPS) -> DRG
Striking (STR Melee DPS) -> MNK
Scouting (DEX Melee DPS) -> NIN
Aiming (DEX Ranged DPS) -> BRD, MCH
Casting (INT Ranged DPS) -> BLM, SMN
Healing (Healer) -> WHM, SCH, AST

The way I look at this is, basically, all of the different roles in the game right now. If they make up more roles, then we'll see.

There were three jobs added in Heavensward: DRK, MCH, and AST, as well as a special job in 2.4, NIN.

Because of this, I do not think we will see any job that uses Fending, Aiming, Healing, or Scouting gear in 4.0. And assuming there are three jobs introduced, that just leaves Maiming, Striking, and Casting to get new jobs associated with them.

SAM would perfectly adapt to Maiming gear, quite easily in fact, as it is heavier armor than Striking/Casting.

I predict RDM will wear Casting gear, as it will likely be an INT Melee DPS of some sort (unless I am dead wrong, which is entirely plausible)

As for Striking Gear... it would have to be a job that wouldn't look out of place in Striking Gear (then again, MCH look somewhat out of place in some BRD gear, so that may be wrong)... maybe a job that uses chakram for weapons? That'd be pretty cool!
