Actually, I have, on occasion, used NPC sales as a temporary "extra inventory". XD Inventory full and I wanna do a synth? Eh, I'll sell these food items to an NPC, do my synth, and then buy them back afterwards. Sold items are only permanently lost once you zone.

The retainer "sell tab" could work the same way. You get money by putting stuff in the sell tab, lose it if you take the item out, and the sell tab erases all contents whenever you change zones...
