I thought the 'glamour' explanation was used on dragons making themselves look like humans.
Like the inquisitor in the main story line.
That is why they throw people of the Witchdrop, to force them to shed their glamours (.... or die a horrible death. I hope that dinner with Halone is worth it).

As for people turning into dragons like in Stone Vigil HM and Snowcloak, I'm not sure. I think I'll be sticking with Sholah's theory.

So if you had sex with a dolphin you wouldn't consider it bestiality? Just sayin.

Dolphins aren't nearly as intelligent as dragons appear in most media, including FFXIV. They have a society and language. They aren't animals despite their appearance.

Is it an ability that dragons bestow on them through some kind of magical means?
Yes, that's where i get confused to. We don't see a dragon to human shift, just humans to dragons using the power 'dragons blood'. Which... could mean anything. Really, when I saw that, I thought it was a reagent, like a vial of dragons blood, that the cultists where consuming to gain power.

And Guilliame (was that his name? The Inquistior) switched back to a elezen after we defeated him too which only adds to the confusion...

In media, you're probably right. However, his point remains. Dolphins, Humans, Dragons are all "animals". Dolphins have the 2nd most powerful brain on the planet, form stable societies, social groups and have a language of their own.

SO, if Dolphin + Human = Beastaility, then Dragon + Human = Beastaility. Neither have the matching organs to make it possible, but at least Dolphins are mammals.

When I think about it I'm am starting to think Dragons are associated with Zodiark.

    1. Dragons live a long time. Midgardsomr lived through multiple astral/umbral eras.
    2. Ultima Weapon looks like a mechanized dragon. Sabik is a star in the "serpent" constellation. Midgardsomr is the "world serpent". Zodiark is referred to as a serpent and looks like one in FF12. Dragons are also referred to a serpents.

According to lore it was the infighting of Man that caused the 1st umbral era.

It also appears (if you read heavensward lyrics) that Dragons are fed up with Mans broken promises and now wanna destroy eorzea. A lot is pointing towards Ishgard since elves where 1st to migrate to Eorzea. Gridania is roughly 500yr old, but Ishgard is at least 1000yrs.

There's also the prophecy saying that the 7th umbral/astral era is the last one and that a shadow (Zodiark? Especially if you see his summon on FF12) will rise

This isn't counting that Eorzea is a world of magic where anything can happen.

The thing is, dragons aren't dolphins. Dragons in FFXIV have brains on par with humans. They have culture, government, a standardized language. They have ideals (the dragons siding with Iceheart to stop the war, versus the ones fighting Ishgard with the horde). Dragons are the same as beastmen, they just look a lot more beastly.
