    Question regarding overmelding

Hi first post sorry if this has been posted before, being playing just over a month.

My question relates to overmeld and the difference between red and white dots, i have been told a red meld means the full affects of materia is lost due to item stat cap.

However upon searching for a i55 hq weaver set I found 2 identical legs with materia already added to both

I understand legs have a +5 control and 3 cp cap which these legs had.

But on one set the + 2 control materia was in red and also the +1 cp

The person i spoke to said that was impossible

Was there multiple materia in it? As in 1 materia had +3 control and the one in red had +2 control? Because the stat caps count all the materia melded to the gear and it is not just a cap for each materia.

Yeah as said above the stat cap is for the item itself, not per materia slot.

To reach +5 control you can use several combinations of materia, commonly III (+3) and II (+2), but you can also use two III (3+3) and the game will turn it into 3+2 (the +2 will look red as it was reduced by 1).

Red words just indicate that the stat gain from that materia has been reduced to fit the cap, when overmelding you should always go for the cheapest combination, also depending on how comfortable you are with taking more risks, overmelding materia of higher tier results in a lower success, but (at least in my server) melding two control IIIs on pants ends up being a lot cheaper than melding a II, likewise with craftsmanship III vs II.

You mention red and white dots. Looking at the image above you see all the items have both red and white dots. The white dots are not an overmeld, they are in a slot that is available for material. The red dots are where there was no slot for material but you melded one anyway. If you notice the white dots have green rings around them, that is because there was an opening for you to attach material to. The red dots do not have a ring because you "overmelded" them, meaning you put a piece of material on the gear when it did not have a slot available.

If you notice on the three images on the right, the description of what the last material does is in red. If this is the case that means the effect was scaled down because it was beyond the cap for that stat. For example, on the Leatherworker's Workboots, the last material (craftsman's competence I), it lists craftsmanship +1 in red. The material actually normally raises craftsmanship by +3, but the cap on the gear itself limited the material to +1.

So the color of the dot simply indicates if the material was normal (white) or an overmeld (red), not if the full effect was given. If the full effects are lost the descriptor for the material will be listed in red (wording) to indicate some of the affect has been lost due to the gear's caps.

Hope I understood you correctly, and that helped. Best of luck.
