The past heroes you're talking about are the players from 1.0 who tried to stop Nael van Darnus and fought at Carteneau. They're still around.
As for arriving on a ship, I think that's up to you to decide where your player comes from and what their motivation is.

Well you kind of arrive on a ship if you start in Limsa Lominsa if you start in Ul'dah or Gridania you actually arrive on a carriage if you are a Legacy player you actually get teleported into the middle of an unknown orchard and then you walk all the way to your starting City-State. Either way you obviously are not from anywhere in Eorzea.

Says who? Maybe my character was on a carriage to Ul'dah because she was coming from Little Ala Mihgo. Maybe someone else's was on a ship to Limsa because they were coming from somewhere else in Eorzea.

This pretty much. My character was a Legacy character and I started ARR on the carriage to Gridania just like most people - this is because those who got the 'Legacy' opening were actually only a small group who had accomplished the special '7th Umbral Era' story in version 1.0 before it shut down (specifically, they had to have passed the Lunar Transmitter boss fight).

Those 1.o characters who didn't were treated story-wise like new players and what they were doing for five years was just handwaved away. It's not a problem to me as this allowed me to work out my character had been injured and rendered amnesiac in the Calamity and had been treated in Ul'dah in the intervening period - after recovering she returned to Gridania to pick up where she left off.

Npcs may say "you're not Eorzean born", but really, who are they to know that? Your character could have really been born and raised there and just spent a lot of time traveling the world, it's entirely up to you.

Ferne also mentioned this when asked about cross species children at the fan fest (might have been the stream only panel). Per the narrative, you are foreign born, but he is quick to add you can ignore that for whatever reason you wish to RP.Also, He kind of implies that because the WoL is not from Eorzia, they have slightly more progressive views, since they do not have the city states history of fighting each other influencing them.

There are intro cutscenes that also mention that you are not used to the high amounts of Aether in Eorzea.

Forcing you to be foreign born is a common narrative tactic. It gives the developer an easy excuse why people need to tell you all the basic information about the region which you as a player don't know.

The specifics of Aether Sickness, such as how it is caused, isn't really explained. It is heavily implied that you're not from around here - as in, not remotely from any of the city states that we know. But you are specifically able to say that this is not your first time to X city state upon your conversation with one of the merchant brothers. The narrative door is left wide open for you to be arriving from anywhere on Hydaelyn, really. Regardless of that, the merchant does seem to assume that you have been away from the realm for long enough to require some explanation even if you do tell him that you've been to the city you are approaching before. The text is just ambiguous enough to leave some wiggle room for your character to be from "around here," even though the tutorial information provided by our merchant companion suggests that he, at least, believes that we are ignorant about how adventuring works in these parts.

I'm in the same situation as Enkidoh, having played a THM until about lvl 35 and having cleared up to "Together We Stand" in the main scenario and up to Ifrit in the 7th Umbral Era story. Nobody remembers anything I did, even though I remind people of The Warriors of Light. I didn't complete the Lunar Transmitter mission, deemed the sub not worth paying for in the reconstruction period - even though I bought the 3 months for the sub discount when it was offered with the expectation that this game would eventually be worth paying for again. Still, it would have been nice to have been remembered by any one of Thancred, F'lhaminn, or Momodi. Technical limitations, I suppose. That, and it would have been quite difficult for the devs to program vastly different dialogue for those who were at Cartenau and therefore forgotten and those who were not and therefore should have been remembered. Thus, it seems that those of us who only got so far in 1.0 were forgotten in the more mundane fashion.

Except the player actually didn't have aether-sickness, that was actually the moment they were awakened to the Echo, and that merchant (who of course was revealed to be a member of the Scions and thus would have known far more than he let on) obviously knew that but didn't think it was prudent to reveal that little detail until the adventurer was ready.

Of course my character being a pre-Calamity adventurer was already awoken to the Echo and was aware of it and that she had it, but the merchant didn't know that (due to the 1.0-ARR changeover canon discontinuity for a 1.0 character who didn't get the Legacy opening). In any event it seems 'aether sickness' is just a placeholder term used to describe any strange symptoms that a person awoken to the Echo experiences (Kan-E-Senna even mentions this at the end of the Gridana starting storyline) without actually referring to any real illness.
