I think the skin color should remain in the realm of Phials.

...Now on the other hand, I DO think that Miqo'te tail "styles" should be an aesthetician option. Not the length, just the style. It just another hair option where a species has visible hair on more than just the top of their heads.

Lore-lol make for a ridiculous argument in this area.

It's a fantasy game, let your mind imagine how they alter skin-pigmentation if you're bothered.

I'd honestly like to see SE meet us in the middle on this one.

We should be able to change hair color, style, eye color, skin tone in game at the esthetician. Miqotes should get the option of tail changes. Maybe make the eye color, skin, and tail changes more expensive then other procedures so that it is a gil sink.

However, if we want to change race, gender--then make that cost a Fantasia from the cash shop. I don't mind paying for those major changes, but its things like paying a cash shop to change something minor like eye and skin color that make me start to feel like I'm being price gouged.

A person's skin color isn't like their Hair Color. You can style your hair, dye your hair, cut it all off, ect. But your skin color and facial features more or less aren't going anywhere without drastic measures. It's your skin. It's like going to a plastic surgeon and changing your facial structure...

...actually, no, changing your facial structure is significantly easier. But skin color? Not without some seriously drastic measures, involving long bleach routines or cancer-inducing radiation exposure. And lets be honest -- deliberate tans rarely look similar to a natural skin tone of the targeted hue, especially when they're more than a few shades.

It has nothing to do with lore. It's just a stupid idea. It doesn't belong in a game like FFXIV, a rare breed of MMO that actually makes attempts to take itself seriously. Such options should be kept limited to Fantasia.

Yes, because letting us wear our underwear or snowman costume to the most hardcore end-game raid is trying to take itself seriously.

It's not a stupid idea either. People practically change their skin-color in real life already, to an extent (bronzing agents, Michael Jackson).

And the fact is, it is a FANTASY GAME.

Organic compounds which alter the skin's pigmentation, LORE DONE.

    1) It's not the same thing and you know it. FFXIV has a limited amount of joke costumes, and unlike the vast majority of MMOs on the market, the battle-appropriate ones are always given design priority. In FFXIV, people get hype for new dungeon loot, not random shit like snowmen or swimsuits.

    2) No, 'people' do not 'practically' change their skin color in real life. Unless you're talking about dark-skinned people who bleach their skin, or lighter skinned people who invest in spray-on tan or deliberately bathe themselves in ionizing radiation for FAR longer than any dermatologist on earth would recommend. If someone is drasticaly changing their skin color, it's almost never a healthy process...and if it is, it's probably brought on by unhealthy reasons. (Michael Jackson?)

    3) This is a "FANTASY" game? Okay, so are Blade & Soul, TERA and PSO2. XIV does not attempt to generate appeal in its characters using the same methods. It does not make the same levels of sacrifices in lore to include features as those games do.

"FANTASY GAME" is a horrible argument, it's far too vague and says literally nothing about the game other than "it's not non-fiction". Which is every videogame in existence.

You skipped my whole reason for posting -- it's still a bad idea.

You could make a "plausible lore reason" for allowing your character to fight with tentacle arms and summon Bahamut with a 300 second cooldown. Doesn't make it a good idea.

Besides, you CAN change your skin color...with Fantasia. Which is an option I tend to remember people begging to drop money on when it was pretty much established as a one-shot deal. Which is why, for once, i'm going to call complete BS on the whole "I FEEL RIPPED OFF" crap.

Not everything in a game will make sense, so the fact that it wouldn't make sense is not a valid excuse to keep a feature out of the game.
I don't understand the crisco oil applied to this argument that suggests that a VIDEOGAME that is LORE based somehow has to have its GAMEPLAY components derived completely from 100% logical situations, as if designing such a game were even freaking possible.

No, not everything in a game will make sense, but knowing when to draw the line is the difference between a game with respectable lore and a game where it means nothing as a result. It's about maintaining integrity, and not selling it out so cheaply.

Lore goes out the window when you can go to sleep (log off) as one race, and wake up (log back in after fantasia) as a different race and/or sex.

Using the argument "changing skin coloer doesn't fit lore". Then explain to me how my previous sentence fits lore.

Changing skin tone fits lore more than changing race and or sex. You could say Lore does not require "Garlean tech". We have Alchemists making "magic potions". They brew up a potion that you apply to your skin or imbue that changes pigmentation. There, explained.

Or you eat magical fruits like your chocobo does. They don't need a fantasia to change colour! I'm sure some skilled Botanist can make them edible for humans too.
