    Start Crafting

    Excuse the obvious question, but...

At what level do you start crafting?

I have read in some forums that some are already crafting by level 4, apparently all that is needed to start is to join the Guild and some tools are provided.
I didn't receive any tool to start crafting, I'm playing Arcanist, lvl 6 at the moment.

Do I need to speak to a specific NPC? I'm presently based in Limsa Lominsa.

When you reach level 10 and do the level 10 quest for your class (arcanist) the guildmaster will suggest you can now pick up other classes. That will unlock the "join" quests for all of the other guilds, including crafting.

You can level each of the crafting classes to 15 without leaving the guildhouse if you want - they sell all the basic materials.

In Limsa are the armorer, blacksmith, and culinarian. The others are in the other cities which you can get to once you do the level 15 story quest which unlocks the airship.

As an arcanist you will probably want weaver and goldsmith for gear and alchemist for weapons. These are all in Ul'dah.

To support the crafting class you may want to pick up the gathering classes as well. Weaver mostly relies on Botanist. Goldsmith relies on Miner. Alchemist is kind of all over the place including Fishing.

And once you do get the go-ahead from your Arcanist trainer to add extra classes, the NPCs you'll want to talk to are the Receptionists at the guildhalls for each class you want to add. They'll give you a quest (just talking with them about the history of the guild) and then ask again whether you want to join, at which point they'll send you to the guildmaster for your starter tool or weapon.

Where you've read about level 4 crafters, that's because each class (whether crafting or combat) has its own level. You'll be at least level 10 as an Arcanist, but start out at level 1 in each new class you add.

It's worth noting that all crafts have a lot of overlap. If you do any crafting, I'd recommend taking them all up equally. You'll likely wish to take gatherers up as well.

    Some levels that are significant:
    • As mentioned, it's level 10 (on your starting class) when the ability to add extra classes is unlocked.
    • At level 15 in the main scenario is a quest that unlocks airship travel, so you can get to the other cities and the class guilds there.
    • At level 17 in the main scenario is a quest that unlocks retainers. These are NPC assistants you can create to do several things for you, one of which is to hold extra items. You'll start dealing with lots of supplies and ingredients once you get into crafting and gathering, and you'll need that extra storage space before you get too far into it. They also take care of selling your items on the Market Boards, so if you're looking at crafting to provide an income stream, you'll need that as well.

I got myself the extra retainer and started a mule specifically for crafting. Just wondering if this was a good move or should I just focus on one character? I've read on the forums about people not being able to mail themselves items (why I got the account retainer) and that lack of space hinders people from leveling multiple jobs. Thoughts?

Keep it all on one character so you don't need to transfer items around and so you can repair your gear.
