How would you break it to someone that their DPS is awful?

"Awful", as in you can see so little enmity generated, and feel the phases pass noticeably slowly when the person in question is in the party that even without parsing, you know they are doing bad damage?

Suppose that the person in question is that awful of a DPS player, but is a great tank and would be a shame to lose over quibbles because the person in question can be touchy about criticism.

    What would you do?

Find out what they are doing wrong and tell them how they could fix/improve it.

    Always remember the Silver Rule:
"Treat others as they treat you!" ...or something like that.

Easy, tell them their "dps sucks and get better at the game look up some rotations," then kick them from the group. They will feel so bad that they may look up some rotation or go back to doing what they do best. I know it hurts, but its tough love. :P

If I notice DPS seems to be lacking I will try to keep an eye on the rotation they are using, if i notice any flaws I will politely say something along the lines of "why don't you try this out, maybe it will work better for you, I've noticed it helps me out a lot". Never say something that will make them feel flawed, and if possible maybe say it away from other people in private chat, keeps the person from feeling embarrassed.

Best way is to is just tell them that their dps is low, what they're doing wrong (if you can tell) and how they respond. If they're really looking to improve, they'd listen or at least question how your suggestion would improve. If they're not gonna bother or see something like that as hostile, then welp.

Unfortunately some people cannot be reasoned with sometimes. However, taking that notion into consideration.... just talk with them like any normal human being, and tell them what's up in a calm and concerned manner. Just let them know, they're lacking in some areas in their DPS, try to help them by both of you figuring out what exactly is the problem. Especially if it's a friend, don't just go blow up on them w/o any warning. It always helps to talk these things out, and if they can't see to reason, or they simply cannot improve, you may just need to move on and find another DPS that can do the job correctly, that doesn't mean your companionship with this person has to end just because you let them go.

I don't have to because Coil doesn't matter.

I would let them be. No one is going to be great at everything. Sure there is always room for improvement somewhere but don't call them out in front of people. That's disrespectful. Wait until the run is done and pull them aside, If they're on your server or in fc, and explain to them you noticed a lull. If you play that class offer tips and even show them on a training dummy. Visuals help a lot. There are better ways of handling this than being a douche bag lol.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

It depends on the relationship between you and the other player. If the bad dps player is a friend or a free company member, then I will tell them that their dps is low, but in gentle way. I will help them and advice them on how they can improve. If these bad dps players are strangers, then I leave them alone. Like in real life, your more likely to be 100% honest in someones face when you know them then when they are a stranger.
