    Gamepads over keyboards FAIL!

I am not sure why this game is being designed around a gamepad. Yes I know there are a lot of lazy gamers who just want to lay down and sleep while playing this game but in my experience any player who uses a gamepad do not perform as well as a player using a keyboard and here's the simple reason why,

    Gamepad buttons - 16 buttons
    Keyboard buttons - 100+ buttons

I don't know about you but the choice to me is obvious. There just isn't enough buttons on a gamepad to control this game, and as long as SE continues to cater to gamepad users and completely ignoring the keyboard users, this game is going to fail. Even when the PS3 release comes out you can plug in a keyboard. Instead of forcing the game to use the same buttons for multiple commands to accommodate a lack of buttons just USE A DAMN KEYBOARD.
Here's a good example, the arrow keys on a controller are used for several commands because of its lack of buttons which hinders game play. When I am in battle and hit the up and down arrows on my keyboard, the only thing that should happen is changing the selected ability bar 1-3, however this isn't the only thing the arrow keys do. All too often I will be fighting something and want to change my ability bar from 1 to 2 and instead all of a sudden I just targeted something else, because the arrow keys also change target, so now I am dead because I couldn't get to my cure quick enough WHY IS THIS??? I don't care what buttons SE decides to use for targeting and for scrolling the ability bar JUST DON'T USE THE SAME ONES!!! It makes no sense for a keyboard user.
Also in the latest update we now have the ability to change target options in target mode A, but not for keyboard users, they just forgot about us I guess. You have to hit the auto-run button + Select to change the target mode to "enemy." Well, guess what my keyboard came without a select button, and no, the enter key does not work. So that tells me SE couldn't care less about keyboard users which is a shame because I am pretty sure every single person playing this game right now is using a keyboard or at least has one attached to their computer. Please SE put the keyboard first and the gamepad second it will make playing this game so much easier and versatile.

Cause they want to release it multi platform. But I agree with you. PC version deserves its own UI and controls. I mean the game doesn't even support mouse, 3,4,5, buttons :/ its a game and I bet majority of us use a mouse with more then left click, right click and a wheel. I think PS3 controls and designing it around PS3 is what gimped the UI to what it is now

Agree, SE please completely redesign the PC UI and controls based on none control pad methods.

You have a huge problem now in that if you take it away or force current users to use proper PC controls they are guna be pretty angry.

Actually even Right Click is useless. They hardly even used that button lol except to rotate camera. At least open context menus and gives us more control with context menu. But whatever....life could be worse. Could be based off of gamecube controls LOL

Good point Smokie, I didn't even think about that. The mouse is capable of much more, but we can't map our elite mice buttons to the game because it doesn't allow for it. If you are going to devote a hand and its five fingers to a mouse you should be able to use all of its buttons. You don't have to redesign the game, just get rid of the "Fixed Keys" section. I don't want any keys to be fixed, just because you think that a button is good for something doesn't mean we think so. Everyone has different methods of controlling this game, quit trying to make us all use controllers. No one button should have more than one function.

I agree also, and to tell the truth I used my keyboard even with FFXI on my PS2. I dont even own a game pad for my laptop, never saw any need.

I agree with Mykro but see that they are trying to kill two birds with one stone. SE is way behind on its PS3 release as it is. I think/hope they are merely attempting to get things moving toward the eventual release on the PS3 and will balance out their interests in the end. We did not receive a very polished product with the PC release and I think they are aiming toward making a far better impression with PS3 users. I still think overall that they should focus on making the game features better for those who are here now rather than making an effort to impress those who are not even here yet.

Making content ready for PS3 release is all that matters right now. The game is playable as-is, and thus the new control scheme is probably low priority.

I did the same thing. I used a USB keyboard to play XI on my Xbox 360 because trying to play with a controller with so few buttons complicates things and takes more windows and clicks to get stuff done. The UI (mainly the action bar) and battle system are the two major things that still have me on the edge of just dropping this game and playing my other games. Even the action bar (can see a recent thread about this one) is gimped and seems based more on gamepad controls.
SE probably don't care to much about PC players since majority of them already threw this game in the garbage and probably wouldn't come back given the things that they said at release. PS3 player base seems almost as their last thread to keep this game alive.
