Think of it like Mog EX when the WHM or BLM moogle begins casting Flare/Holy and DPS has to do enough damage to stop it.

Exactly. I've done the fight several times as healer and DPS and it's definitely a check for the DPS. They need to do enough damage to Captain Madison to stop him from shooting. The key to the DPS is that when he charges someone, it's time to lay into him as hard as possible. Also, the slaves need to go down fast as they will bind.
I've found most people having trouble with the first boss. No one takes the stun off the tank and there's no one to stun the Tail Screw move. Healers don't esuna the stacks so people wipe when tail screw is effective. The final boss seems to be the easiest here.
It baffles me hearing healers not taking off that status effect. You have more than enough time to get it off everyone, it's an effect that pops up after an enemy attack lands, and it's colored red. Then again nearly every one of my failed DF Moogle EX parties was because of healers never using Esuna/Leeches on anything.
I've been running these experts as WHM constantly to work on my Nexus lights and I feel I might snap at someone if I didn't.
The only time in which someone died on me due to this status effect was when it was placed as follows:
- Me single stack
- Dps 1 double stack
- Dps 2 double stack
I had to sacrifice one dps since i couldn't clear 5 stacks before the next hit. And tank didn't stun a single tail screw so yeah, death had to happen. That run ended with me having only 300 mp left :/
Three stacks are cleansed easily, but when its more than that, at least in that one run i had to let someone face the risk of death.
I don't think I've ever seen multiple stacks on people. I'm guessing everyone was standing too close together and they were getting hit by multiple slimes? The only time in which someone died on me due to this status effect was when it was placed as follows:

You have a good amount of time to Esuna 3 people without any kind of casting speed buffs... I go all out DPSing on my whm in that fight and even being midcast I've never failed to get rid of all 3 debuffs. Keep an eye out for the tank being stunned and the slime being shot so you know it is coming. If you miss half a second and the boss tags 3 of you.
-you
-dps
-dps
Then most likely 1 of you will die.
If you don't have PoM or swiftcast off of cool down it will be impossible, unless the tank stuns the move.
Also if you don't start casting esuna/ leech on the mogdark debuff by the first second then there won't be enough time to get them both as they might be unfortunately out of range thus wasting time, thus killing them lol.
About the moogles, it's not even the Moogle Go Round debuff that I'm talking about. The icons are super similar and I'm sure its intentionally done that way to trick healers and that def would need some practice to figure out. I've had multiple failures because the charm doesn't get Esuna'd, the charm that has really noticeable pink chains for a few seconds before it actually hits and has a unique, moogle face debuff icon in the party list.

No we weren't, it was a very strange situation. I was standing aside, and we had melee and a bard, so people were spread out enough. But maybe dps were standing close and I didn't notice. So yeah that was the only scenario in which it was difficult to esuna. Three stacks is just fine and anyone who can't cleanse that definitely needs to step it up.
To back you up, I've had this (multi-stacks) more often than not when I run this dungeon with FC, also - our seemingly constant layout was tank, DRG on the boss, SMN by the entrance, and I always seem to skirt around to the lower left side rather than directly behind with the SMN (weird habit I have to just run off to an angle'd side) so we weren't particularly close together, either. We seem to have a similar layout. No we weren't, it was a very strange situation. I was standing aside, and we had melee and a bard, so people were spread out enough. Only times I was closer to everyone else was to Medica II (to help mitigate damage from stacks and regen for Tail Screw (also did help when stacked + tail screwed while busy esuna-ing said double stacks off people).
Always by mid to end of the fight, three of us would get double stacked at one time, and I'm left fighting to esuna and keep everyone healed from stack damage, tail screw and tank's usual received damage at the same time. It ends up feeling like Madison's musket tirade - but on all members at the same time o_O
The easiest time we've had with this particular boss was when we somehow did NOT get double stacked.... then it was a cakewalk

If one person is down and he's up to where he'll hit 4, then one person will get two stacks. The boss fires one, two, three, four... If two people are dead, 4 will be 2 on each person. I have had the displeasure of being there as the only person other than the healer and I had 3 stacks as DPS. Let's just say it lasted long enough for me to notice the effect.
This fight really comes down to DPS'ing the scorpion quickly, stunning tailscrew, and removing the effect. We asked our DRG to limit break right away every time. Think he did? With a DRG and a PAL, there was no reason that TailScrew got off every time. Someone also has to be the sacrificial lamb and remove the target line to the tank so that when stun takes effect, the tank CAN stun TS.
