I do that too. 9999 is just an untidy way of saying 10000, so I buy the one that was listed first to be fair to the seller (and because I like round numbers). Undercutting by 1 gil is the market equivalent of a kill steal (a "sell steal"?) If I've made a seller happy then I feel good about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

But I undercut by 1g someone who posted at 10001g, or 8001g several times this week alone. Now you just bought from me!

It's all arbitrary. Buy whichever one you want, but don't assume you have exercised some moral principle by buying a particular price level, whether the previous price was 1g higher, 98g higher, or 786g higher. Why not buy the most expensive one on the market? You will engender the greatest happiness and realize the most un-earned self-righteousness and false sense of moral superiority. Win-win!!

Er, yes, but you asume there is a logical reason for everything I do. If you undercut 8001g by 1g, I will buy from you I like round numbers cos they don't make me think and they leave my balance looking tidy. People can sell at whatever price they want, and I just buy if I want to. Paying one gill more is just the rebel in me not wanting to do what people expect. That and thinking that I may have made someone happy who thought they had been undercut already (who for all I know could be a bot operator). I just NPC everything I don't need - it's quicker.

When I'm choosing to undercut, after playing the 1 gil undercutting game for awhile I honestly get tired of it and do a steeper undercut to discourage further undercutting. Most of the time though, I just leave my items listed. I'm comfortable with gil now and I don't have any need to sell at a lower price. Usually I try to simply list something in another town and price match, and that seems to work just fine MOST of the time.

Don't get emotional about pricing, it makes you lose money, in game and this is applicable to real life too.

BTW, The market does NOT believe in "waiting your turn" by the way. The player that puts in the effort to keep their prices current and always ahead by 1gil will be first to sell and that is because they put in the effort.
I've been known to undercut people until the item's barely worth selling, then yank mine from the market and wait for theirs to sell so I can relist mine higher. I swear, the PVP on the market board is better than Frontlines. :3

The only true undercutting that ever happens is if you sell below vendor value. The problem is that you are overcharging, not that others are undercutting you. o.O

That's right, I just shut down the debate.

I'll undercut by atleast 10% or more just to drive the price the down, when it reaches a good enough decline I will buy it up and resell at back at the price I originally undercut, after I made my first million doing this, I figured it was a good way to manipulate the market. They put it there for us to use it as we see fit, so I made the system work for me.

The markets in this game and the emotional response that people have just crack me up. I love how many people are willing to share their "trade secrets" with other people, but people just write-off the suggestions for one reason or another. Personally the undercutting/overpricing game is quite funny. Every once in a while I go and adjust prices on my items for sale and I crack myself up. I normally do the undercut by 1 gil, so my item is at the top of the list for at least a min, so it really cracks me up when I have something like an animal skin up for sale for like 600 gil but end up just having to NPC it because there are 500 of them listed for 1 gil each. Looking back on it, it cracks me up that I would even put it up for sale for that much in the first place.

Ah the undercut threads. Always a popcorn eating good time at work. Please continue to entertain me with faulty understandings of rudimentary economics bound with the emotional zeal of social injustice and moral righteousness.
