Can we get the ability to assign aliases to people? (for both friend list and free company) It would be nice to do "/tell john" or "/tell buddy1" instead of "/tell John Smith."

That would be good.
its to late for that, ivseen to many people with same first name, If they gona change that then they need give every player ingame name change.
From what I gather of the idea it seems you the player assign the alias and decide it on your own. And since it only applies to those in your FC or friends list you can manage it very easily. If you happen to have more then one person in your FC or friends list with the same first name, simply change the alias or use the /buddy# idea in the original post. So in my opinion the idea still functions.
Edit: this is how I think it goes-
I want an easier way to message my friend (Nami kanani) But I don't want to type the whole name when I tell. But wait! There is more then one Nami in my friends list. In this case I give my intended target the alias /tell Nams instead of /tell Nami. Or I could also assign her a number and do /tell Buddy1.

I don't think the OP is asking for us to use first names specifically, but rather allow us to assign shorthand for friends that the game would recognize. It could be their first name, but doesn't have to be and if it was it wouldn't matter how many others have that name because the shorthand would only match the player we'd "program" it for.
This is a neat idea. I would certainly put it to use if it were implemented.
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.
Gawds, yes, please. This should be a standard feature on every MMO.
10 posts per page is only the default setting; it is bad, and you should feel bad if you haven't changed it.
