That donkey picture made me laugh. When you see someone overcharge for something on MB by 100k gil, the best thing you can do to keep them from selling it and taking advantage of someone is to place one for sale yourself, but listing it for 99k gil.

So then you take advantage of someone but for 1k less? That is the best thing you can do? Really? If you feel the need to be the hero in that situation, the best thing you can do is put one up for sale at the same price the NPC sells it for plus the 5% cost to sell it. That way you aren't making a profit by taking advantage of someone and neither are they.
Plus then if the person that originally put it on MB for 100k more drops their price below yours they end up losing gil for their effort.

I apologize in advance as I value your input and mean no offense to you personally, but I find this thought process really depressing because it means that people are not being properly educated on the free market system which is a key component of freedom in this world as well as in Eorzea.
Why anybody would take the time to buy something and sell it and not make any profit is beyond me. That is like going to work and not getting paid for the time spent there. Anybody that is successfully selling a product or service to someone else is doing it right otherwise it would not have been bought. People sometimes buy off of impulse (yes unfortunately some regret it later- me included for some things I bought so far this patch), convenience, etc. There are always going to be things on the market board that are more expensive than they are in their respective NPC shops as long as people are buying them.

We were all created equal, with the equal opportunity to become unequal.

No, not really. That was intended as a joke.
That said, if someone is making money selling something overpriced and people are buying, I see no reason not to join in. When patch dropped I was one of the people crafting and selling HQ gear < level 10 for Rogues at high prices and the first hour they were flying off the shelves as fast as I could craft them. But people could have bought NQ versions or crafted HQ versions themselves if they'd put time and resources into crafting prior to then so buying was optional. Since players were paying 10-15k gil a pop for my HQ Hempen Saraouls and Tunics for their Rogues, I went the added step of crafting black dye and dying them first to give them more for their gil which none of the other crafters were doing. It's completely fair, they got to spend the time levelling the new class which I would have liked to have done... I spent the time making shirts and pants and used the 500k gil I made towards the house I bought.

Nothing new here.
There are tons of items you can buy from NPCs and sell for good profit on the MB. Just pay attention to trends and items that are more sought after.
Sometimes its easier to buy from the MB then to trek to the vendor....

glamor dispellers ^^

For some, the convenience of the market boards trumps the cost savings of going to the NPC. It really depends on how much you value your time, compared to how much you value your money. That said, you have to have pretty deep pockets and a lot of impatience to overpay by 50k gil deliberately.
For folks like the OP that overpaid by mistake, well, now you know!

People do the same thing with "The Emperor's New...." stuff for invisible glamours. It's hilarious. You can buy each piece for under 100g and people sell them on the MB for 9000g. I can't believe people fall for that crap XD

So wait, these can be sold, just not traded? I've been trying to find out information on them. The problem is, you have to be a level 50 crafter to purchase them.

Yes they can be sold on the market boards, I saw some up yesterday.
Oh really? I had no idea you had to have a lvl 50 craft to purchase them from the NPC. To be honest, getting at least 1 lvl 50 craft is so easy these days (especially if you use the new Ixali quests to lvl) it shouldn't be a problem. Regardless though, the markup on these items is insane and I can't believe people pay it.
