Hello, this is a very good question.

I think that the only reason to level your (other) class to 15 is to teach you what kind of gameplay your new "job" will integrate into your current class. I have never ever seen in the endgame (meaning Level 50 dungeon and beyond) someone who is a level 50 class and not a level 50 job.

I am not the most experienced in this game by any means but I think there has been a lot of math done to calculate the optimal DPS, or ways to Tank or Heal and it seems like if you don't follow the job progression, then you will be losing out. I am also pretty sure that with every new job you get 5 new skills. Granted you lose a couple of moves from your main class along the way but I think that if you went into a level 50 dungeon as a Lancer for example, people might rage...I am not sure and I have never heard of this happen.

I just haven't seen a level 50 class do any endgame content but it might be worth a shot. Sadly there is no extra benefit in leveling up the other side of these jobs save for some cross-class ability possibly being unlocked but this all depends on which class and job you are discussing.

EDIT: Also the stat post in the above posters post. I did not know about that. ^_^ This is actually a huge boost. Also, I thought of something else. The very high level equipment (not sure about i135) but i110 equipment is job specific and if you were a dragoon, it would not fit your lancer. Don't know why they made it that way but I think your class was just meant to teach you how to be that job...I think this is how the developers designed the battle system.
