Aye...
...completely unnoticeable indeed and not an eyesore at all. Idk where Yoshi got that idea from, sadly. :/
That said, it's way beyond clear that if 1.0 had anything better, graphics sure was one such thing. But #PS3limitations in general.

The current sandstorm weather in Thanalan need more sand

1.0 had better textures and bump/normal mapping, the game running like crap was more the fault of Crystal Tools being a horrible engine. Just look at how bad the FF13 PC port is without any mods, as bad as the game itself. It also made good use of color filters to accentuate scenes. Here's hoping DX11 will bring back some of that detail back.
Where are people getting the idea that 1.0 had better textures? I'm pretty sure the textures from 1.0 we're brought over to 2.0. Take a look at this video of 1.0, a cutscene featuring many of the existing characters you find in 2.0. Notice that they appear like they do in 2.0.
Does that look like high-res textures to you?
There were places in 1.0 where textures did appear crisp even up close, but the game did not seem to care for flat areas, which always appeared low-res and ugly.
The rocks look crisp but the ground is flat and ugly.
I think 1.0 did have some better lighting effects. HDR and bloom effects were done nicely.
Take a look at the Garuda Story Battle from 1.0.

The intro cinematic (which is nearly identical to the one in 2.0) I think looks quite a bit better. The fight looks considerably worse IMO. It also demonstrates some of the weather effects.
I don't remember the weather effects being all the better in 1.0. Perhaps they we're more "organic" and more realistic. But I'm not sure that's a good thing. Whenever there was a thunderstorm in The Black Shroud, your visibility went to naught, with everything looking very dark, like a real rain storm a big forest might. The shroud was annoying enough when you could see where you we're going. The weather made it ten times worse!
This is what I mean. It might "look" better in a screenshot, been when you are actually playing, the limited visibility get's very annoying very fast. No one wants to go back to this. Players like to see things not being obstructed by ugly brown dust.

Nope character models in 1.0. were indeed far superior over the ARR character models. you havent played 1.0. right? The clothings also have lower texture resolutions. unfortunatley i have no comparison picture for it. but i saw once one good example.
Character Models comparison:
Moogle:
ARR:
1.0.
Gaius:
1.0.
Brother E-Sumi:
ARR (huge downgrade if you ask me) .. he lost his"soul" completely:
1.0.
Kann-E-Senna:
1.0.
ARR
Urianger 1.0.
Titan
1.0.
ARR
Well maybe a better lightning can do wonders... we also miss bloom effects, unsharpness effects etc (people who dont like it could turn it off).. i myself liked it in FFXIV 1.0. back then.:
But as you can see the character models and their textures were more brillant (and timeless) back then in the old version.
i'd love they bring back some of these brillance with the introduction of DX11 Features.. i wish this really bad..
As much as i love ARR i loved also many parts of 1.0. (especially the atmosphere of the openworld)

players do want real sandstorms. 1.0 sandstorms were awesome! I was just talking about this with my Girlfriend yesterday. You shouldn't go around saything "Players like to see things not being obstructed by ugly brown dust" this statement is quite ignorant.

You can make really nice textures if you only have to texture few models and C&P it a few dozen times to make a "world".
BTW, why are you faceplanting into an uninteresting rock wall in the first place?
