I'm sure you could equally agree that it was fairly difficult and luck based as is to HQ a 3-Star. I was able to HQ 3 Stars but none short of luck between Good Procs and Hasty Touch successes. In hindsight, like all crafts, they're actually not *that* bad. RNG can suck but I was consistently hitting over 50% after I fine-tuned my rotation.
But I agree, 4 star crafts kind of suck right now, especially with some of the mats behind gated behind content no one farms anymore (i.e. T1-5).
Like honestly why couldn't this HQ item have been the same Durability and Quality? It is a 3-Star craft all the same. For what purpose must it be nearly twice as hard, when the content behind that is fairly difficult and gated behind other various content?

I had actually already predicted that the new books would require HQ versions of the supra items, since they were being changed as such. Just to finish the progress, you have to use 4 PbP and 3 CS2. I did 5 attempts and just managed to get 1 HQ of the balanced hook.
However I think some of you are forgetting one thing, we can now desync these, and NQ and HQ versions both have the same chance of giving whatever it blows up to. I'm willing to bet that these 3 star crafts desync into mastercraft demi, thus you can make your money back.
I didn't get in desync prior to 2.4, but now with that in mind, it is what I will be working on. If you can make the connection, BSM can make fieldcraft III from summoning bells, thus craft darksteel hooks, blow up all the NQ for some (hopefully) mastercraft, and keep the HQ you do get for your new book, make new offhand tools (six of them as BSM) with your new ability to acquire (again hopefully!!!!) mastercraft from blowing up NQ balanced hooks.
This. Pentamelded i90 was very good when people were still progressing 2nd coil and there were even a few pieces that were straight better than 110. Pre 2.4 the Dragoon BiS headpiece was pentamelded i90, ruby accs were BiS for tanks until yesterday. I am pretty sure it will be a similar story in 2.4. Pentamelded hq is just that much better than same ilvl dungeon/token/raid gear.Well, for once it's actually not so bad.
110 gear is craftable as of this patch; which even though Soldiery is uncapped, buying it straight up makes a big difference in not having to get Second Coil drops/Syrcus Tower drops and then farm the soldiery for every single piece. It's still not the best but for the moment crafting is actually in at least a half decent spot - or at least better than it has been previous.

That's a way to get some of the lost materials back if somehow we get NQ but do remember that there are 8 DoH classes but you can only desynth 3 classes >.<
It's a bit of a downer that if you do manage to NQ one of the mats, and you don't have a desynth for it, there is no reward for it, like the food/cordials from 2.3 (as little reward as they were, at least the NQ got used)
Yes that's true, again I didn't dive into desync last patch so had forgotten that 3 craft limit. Also, I actually only have three crafts I am focused on, got supras for them, so I can see this being an issue for a truly serious crafter of all 8 crafts. On another note, the price of fieldcraft III on my server tripled in price in less than an hour lol, can't imagine what it is like now. That's a way to get some of the lost materials back if somehow we get NQ but do remember that there are 8 DoH classes but you can only desynth 3 classes >.<

Why do you say crafting is only for the richest players in the game?
1. If you are a crafter with up to 3 star you can make good gil, if you have 3 star and you are not then you may want to look at what you can make so you can get a ROI.
2. SE has made Fieldcraft 3 quite easy and cheap to obtain (although it can take some time to farm the mats (Rimless, and thick Glasses)). There are probably other options now but I have not looked.
3. Materia can be made yourself and tier 3 materia (which is 1 less than tier 4 on stats) typically stayed very cheap.
If there is not a Return on investment then there is no benefit to making the new stuff.
However by having these gates. If you are determined enough (even if mostly broke) you can make good gil, and get the stuff you need for higher level crafting. There is only cost if you take the shortcut and use the marketboard route.
Hope that helps for all of those who are on the fence. I personally feel that reasonable gates give a level of accomplishment and there is enough incentive to get there.
To make it even easier there is new high crafting and gathering food in the existing master books to give you a larger boost.
