choosing a world

I am trying to create a new character, and I want to play on a world that is based on the east coast of the US so I have more people on when I am. How can I find out what world to start in?

The servers are not usually split by time zone. However, I might suggest trying more populated servers like Balmung and Behemoth. Leviathan I know from personal experience has a large EST population active from 8pm onwards.

I would recommend the OP check what features he/she may enjoy from this game first before choosing servers. Higher population servers at the current time are suffering from lack of housing. If these are features the OP is interested in, choose a medium/smaller server with your EST needs where these features are more readily available.

Housing is the very last thing I'm interested in. I want to run content and play with a good FC and community. Play the game. Not kill myself for a house.

I'm on Balmung and I like the server. Lots of people are on around 9pm and they are a lively bunch. If you are looking for an FC two friends and I are starting one up so we can have a consistent group for end game.

Maybe I should have specified that I am on primarily 7am to 6pm eastern time, I want to find an fc that will be on with me and able/willing to help with the older content since I haven't reached the 2.4 stuff at all

Hmm, that's a pretty wide range, but I can understand not finding many NA players at those times. Have you considered the EU servers like Moogle, Shiva, and Cactuar? They're more likely to be online at your time (at least the latter half).

As a plus, the EU servers are technically located in the same place as the NA servers (Montreal, Canada) so there's no real difference in lag. That might change in the future with devoted EU servers, but likely not until February or later.

Make a new character and look for the major player hubs, or check the forums before transferring your char over.

I'd go with what the person above said. Phoenix is pretty well-populated at those hours too.
