There are a few recipes which are pretty bad as to their requirements

now i can understand the need for a rank 40 material from ANOTHER craft to make something
but when the recipe is lets say rank 20, and the material in it is rank 30-40 within its own craft, thats what i call a bit lobsided

rank 5 recipe rank 12 material isnt bad at all, you can probly easily make the rank 12 material so it shouldnt be an issue, its the higher stuff that becomes an issue(there arent alot of them but there are a few)

I personally think that a part of this was the disconnect between the art department and the coders. So far, SE has stuck quite religiously to the concept of WYSIWYG. That is, every single component used in a recipe is reflected in the final item. So, given the final item as created by the art department, suitable in-game materials (of the appropriate color) must be found to make up the recipe itself.

Parts of this system are admirable : if you see another player or NPC in-game wearing an item, close examination of the item will actually tell you what the recipe is to make the item (e.g. see NPC in Miner's guild with Dodotail Pickaxe, note the auburn canvas grip, add auburn canvas to upgrade recipe to make Dodotail Pickaxe).

Unfortunately, it also does lead to some extremely out of balance recipes. My favorite is the White Skillet. This rank 17 CUL main hand tool requires white enamel, because the inner surface of the frypan is white. It looks pretty. The only problem? White enamel is a rank45+ alchemist synthesis. To make matters even more fun, white enamel is made from white stainsand, and white stainsand can only be quarried from grade 5 mining quarries (off hand tool). In particular, there is only ONE such quarry in the game that drops white stainsand -- and it is guarded by aggressive rank45+ enemies. I really all seems like a lot of work to go to just for a rank 17 frying pan.

So, there are some good parts and bad parts. As noted above, 1.19 is supposed to see a lot of changed in recipes : something I look forward to with both anticipation and apprehension.
